Bukit Kukus paired road to open partially by mid-2020

bukit-kukus-paired-road-planThe Penang government aims to complete the Penang Island City Council’s (MBPP) portion of the RM545.6 million Jalan Bukit Kukus paired road project by the middle of next year.

State Public Works, Utilities and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman, Zairil Khir Johari said that 2.8 km out of the five-kilometre elevated paired road had been 75 per cent completed and the contractor would be requested to build a 200-metre road linking Jalan Paya Terubong near the Durian Cap Cangkul shack to the new highway for public access.

“As for the two other contractors that are involved in the remaining sections of the project, their parts will be delayed due to financial issues,” he told reporters at the Jalan Bukit Kukus project construction site here.

The two contractors, Geo Valley Sdn Bhd and PLB Land Sdn Bhd, are responsible for the remaining 1.4km and 0.8km stretches respectively.

Also accompanying Zairil were State Welfare and Caring Society Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh and representatives from MBPP, Drainage and Irrigation Department, Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia, Department of Environment and the Mineral and Geoscience Department.

Earlier, a special task force under the Erosion and Sedimentation Control Committee code-named “Op Lumpur” was at the project site to check on the project’s compliance with the Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control Plan (EPSCP).

Nine foreign workers died and four others were injured in a landslide at the Bukit Kukus project site on Oct 19, last year.

To prevent a similar disaster, the project resident engineer Amir Abdullah said several erosion and sediment control procedures had been undertaken to comply with the EPSCP checklist.

“To ensure safety, the construction site had carried out proper erosion control measures such as installing geotextile, creating check dams, silt traps and berms, and doing hydroseeding,” he added.
