Following a tradition, the new committee of the Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association Malaysia (Rehda) Penang paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow in Komtar yesterday.

The Rehda Penang delegation, led by its chairman Khoo Teck Chong, comprised immediate past chairman Tan Hun Beng, recent past chairman Datuk Toh Chin Leong, deputy chairman Datuk Chan Soo How, assistant secretary Ron Loh, and committee members Datuk Jerry Chan, who is also a former chairman, Datuk Chan Fock Seng and Patrick Khoo.

The developers took the opportunity to raise several issues while Chow listened as well as took notes.

Among the issues were e-Tanah, land title search/application for titles, “syarat nyata” (express condition) in land title, strata title, rezoning, appeals board cases, high compliance costs & cost of doing business, residential policy and affordable homes.

Khoo also requested more engagement sessions with government agencies and local authorities before policies and guidelines are approved, saying that Redha Penang was always ready to partner with the state government.

Chow, who attended the Rehda Penang Fellowship Dinner 2022 on June 24, said he was aware of the challenging times that Rehda Penang is facing and would study their proposals.

The construction work on the most-awaited and biggest sports centre in the south Seberang Perai (SPS) district, known as Nibong Tebal Arena, is expected to be completed by the first quarter of next year.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the work on the project started in August last year.

“As of now, the construction work of the 7,316sq m sports centre located at Taman Helang Jaya in Bukit Panchor is 30% complete.

“Once fully completed, the RM8.78mil sports centre will be equipped with nine badminton courts and a multi-purpose hall.

“We are confident of doing our best to ensure that the project is completed within the stipulated time,” Chow said in his speech before taking part in the ground-breaking ceremony at Taman Helang Jaya in Bukit Panchor today.

Also present were state Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee, Jawi assemblyman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP) director Harry Chai Heng Hua, Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) mayor Datuk Azhar Arshad and Penang Stadium and Open Spaces Corporation (PSDKLPP) chief executive officer Zul Kahar Khamis.

According to Chow, the badminton courts could also be converted for the use of other sports such as netball, volleyball, silat, sepak takraw, table tennis (ping pong), karate, wushu and many others.

“We can change the use of the courts when hosting certain sports competitions.

“There are also 900 units of retractable seating (also known as telescopic seating) for spectators and other state-of-the-art facilities.

“In addition, the multi-purpose hall has facilities such as a ballroom which can accommodate 170 tables and a stage. There are also 76 parking lots for cars and 30 lots for motorcycles and many more,” he added.

Chow said once the Nibong Tebal Arena is completed, the sports centre would play an important role to stimulate the economy and sports activities in Seberang Perai and its surrounding areas.

“So, apart from holding national-level sports competitions at the centre, the public can use the multi-purpose hall to organise wedding receptions, meetings, conferences and exhibitions.

“This project will bring huge benefits to the Seberang Perai community through the infrastructure provided,” he said.

Penang Hill Gallery @ Edgecliff now open

Property News/ 8 July 2022 1 comment

After four years of transformation, the Penang Hill Gallery @ Edgecliff is finally open!

From its outdoor terrace and balconies, the impressive art deco-styled bungalow offers an amazing 270-degree view of Penang island.

Its interior features various artefacts, exhibits and stories of the hill. The Penang Hill Gallery @ Edgecliff is not just a gallery but an education centre that is surrounded by rich flora and fauna.

Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) senior manager Shahril Cheah said the gallery is divided into five sections – time tunnel, biodiversity, heritage, funicular, and culture.

“Each section allows us to embrace more than a century of Penang Hill’s history, as though we are travelling back in time.

“The journey starts from the time tunnel, followed by the biodiversity section for visitors to explore an ‘indoor forest’, and a sneak peak into the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve that was recently listed under the Unesco’s Man and the Biosphere Programme.

“The heritage section offers visitors to discover stories behind each bungalow on the hill and to admire the engineering marvel and the construction of the funicular.

“Lastly, the historic culture and transformation of the Penang Hill Gallery @ Edgecliff are displayed at the culture section,” he read out the speech by PHC general manager Datuk Cheok Lay Leng, who was unable to be present, today.

Cheah said the corporation was proud to announce that Penang Hill Gallery @ Edgecliff was the first project in the country that had achieved certification under the Green Building Index Non-Residential Existing Building (NREB) Historic Building Tool.

“The gallery is equipped with sustainable features such as solar panels, a rain harvesting system and a motion sensor lighting as part of our efforts to conserve enerygy, in line with our environmental sustainability goal.

“Our special thanks go to First Solar Malaysia for the contribution of solar panels, in support of the Penang government and PHC’s green initiatives,” he said.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow congratulated the PHC team, consultants, contractors, volunteers, and contributors for playing significant roles in restoring the heritage bungalow and repurposing it for educational and heritage use.

“The state government fully supports the effort of repurposing the Edgecliff premises for educational and cultural purposes.

“This heritage project involved the creation and reliving of the historic Edgecliff bungalow that was built by the architect J.C. Miller in 1937.

“And today, PHC has turned it into a gallery and education centre. This is definitely not an easy task that can be accomplished overnight.

“It requires relentless efforts, dedication and commitment to restore and revitalise this 85-year-old state-owned bungalow which is perched on a steep slope on Penang Hill and nestled within the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve.

“Since the start of the Edgecliff bungalow project in 2019, the continuous works to strengthen the hill slopes and conservation of this Category II heritage building were carried out systematically by PHC,” he said before opening the gallery.

Chow said the Penang Hill Gallery @ Edgecliff would provide a great insight into rich diversity, history, traditions and funicular engineering of Penang Hill.
