WoodHaven Park – The second night park in Penang

woodhaven-jalan-betek

Inspired by concepts instilled at the Penang City Park and Penang Botanic Gardens on the island, Seberang Perai has a new park called WoodHaven, and it is now officially open to the public!

Located at Jalan Betek in Bukit Mertajam, the park was completed under the guidance of the Penang Stadium Corporation and Open Spaces (SCOS).

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said this project was part of the 68 electoral commitments under the 14th General Election (2018) manifesto.

“I am extremely happy to witness the completion of this park, and as I have said before, this new addition will be a huge boost to improve Seberang Perai’s image by attracting more local and international visitors.

“With the LovePENANG spirit, we have added an important element at this park, which is the ‘Family Lawn’, making it the first recreational park in the state with this new feature.

“This is part of our drive at the state government to ensure such open spaces are given an extra life, instilling important elements to attract and create a platform for families and friends to bond in green surroundings.

“I also understand that this will be regarded as the second night park to ever be built in the state after the first one was successfully established at Taman Areca on the island.

“Thank you Penang Stadium Corporation and Open Spaces and other relevant bodies for all your efforts and time in materialising this initiative here today,” Chow said in his speech at the official launching ceremony of the park in Bukit Mertajam yesterday.

The event was graced by the presence of Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak.

It is learnt that WoodHaven Park, which is located on 6.5-acre land, was completed at a total cost of RM2.47 million.

As part of the celebration, a mural painting measuring 218.5 metres in length and 2.1 metres in height was unveiled. The artwork shows a combination of natural and abstract concepts.

Also present during the event earlier were State Secretary Datuk Mohd Sayuthi Bakar, state Social Development and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Chong Eng, state Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee, state Welfare and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh, Chow’s wife Tan Lean Kee, Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) mayor Datuk Azhar Arshad, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng and SCOS executive director Rashidah Jalaludin.

Penang Chief Minister, YAB Chow Kon Yeow, announced yesterday that the global market leader in cable car systems, Doppelmayr, will be responsible for providing the cable car system for Penang Hill. Doppelmayr Group has an impressive track record, having constructed over 86 cable car installations in UNESCO Heritage, Geopark, and Biosphere sites, as well as national parks in various countries worldwide.

Chow expressed confidence in Doppelmayr’s expertise, emphasizing their reputation for reliability, safety, and cutting-edge technology. He believes that with their involvement, the cable car service on Penang Hill will meet the highest international standards. The aim of the project is to create a world-class attraction, adopting a holistic approach.

penang-hill-cable-car-signing-ceremonyThe signing of the concession agreement between Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) and Hartasuma Sdn Bhd yesterday marked an important milestone for the development of the Penang Hill cable car service. Hartasuma, a local pioneer in the rail industry, won the bid for the cable car project in December. Out of the six companies that submitted the Request for Proposal (RFP), Hartasuma was selected. The estimated investment for the project is RM245 million, and it will operate on a 30-year concession period.

The project is projected to take three years to complete and become fully operational. Chow elaborated on the project, highlighting the consideration given to environmental and social factors. Cable cars run on electric power, resulting in minimal noise pollution. The construction process will involve minimal tree cutting, ensuring minimal negative impact on the environment.

Both PHC and Hartasuma are committed to minimizing the number of towers and their footprint in the project’s design and implementation. The concessionaire will adopt green construction methods, employing manual labor for foundation works and using a hand-dug caisson method. These measures, which avoid heavy machinery, will preserve the surrounding greenery and limit on-site clearing. Additionally, no new roads will be built, and the existing jeep track will be used for transportation.

Chow also mentioned that the concessionaire aims to obtain certification under the Green Building Index for the project. Addressing concerns raised by environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Chow assured that the project is mindful of its necessity and will be carried out with minimal environmental impact.

The upgrading project of the Seberang Perai Public Swimming Pool has reached 65% completion and is expected to be finished by October this year, with the possibility of reopening as early as January next year. The entrance fee will remain unchanged.

YB Soon Lip Chee, the chairman of the Penang Youth and Sports Committee, visited the progress of the pool project on Thursday and stated that the entrance fee was the public’s primary concern. He reassured the public that the entrance fee would remain at RM3, and there is no need to worry.

He said that on March 22, 2022, the Seberang Perai City Council transferred the management of the swimming pool to the Penang Stadium Board and Open Spaces Corporation, and leased it to the private company D Swim Academy Sdn. Bhd. for a period of 18 years.

He said that the upgrading project started in July last year, and the cost was borne by the rental company. After the project started, it was discovered that there were many water leakage problems, so the project cost was increased from the original RM3 million to RM4 million ringgit.

He said the enhancement works included pool maintenance and upgrading, capping of the adult pool, upgrading of toilets, ticket counters, restaurants and prayer rooms, as well as electrical works, installation of CCTV, upgrading of the pump room and automatic acid level (pH) regulation system.

Before the closure, the pool was open from 11am to 9pm Tuesday to Friday, 9am to 9pm on Saturday and Sunday, and closed on Monday for maintenance.

The admission fee is RM3 for adults, RM1.50 for children (under 12 years old), RM10 for foreigners, RM5 for foreign children, free for the disabled and senior citizens (over 60 years old).

Soon stated that the state government fully supports the promotion program of swimming lessons for B40 families and children organized by the Youth and Sports Department. After the pool reopens, they will collaborate with D Swim Academy to provide swimming courses and enable more B40 children to learn swimming.
