85% Say ‘YES’ to Pan Island Link 1

pil1-poll

85% of our readers support PIL1

Pan Island Link 1 (also known as PIL1) is currently one of the most debated infrastructure projects in Penang. The proposed dual three–lane highway will be connecting Second Bridge and the Penang International Airport all the way towards George Town, Paya Terubong, Bayan Baru, and Relau. It is expected to reduce travelling time from Persiaran Gurney to Penang International Airport (PIA) to only 15 minutes.

A group of concerned Penangites, have started an online petition to call for the cancellation of the project while there is also an opposing petition that calls for the approval and implementation of the PTMP, which includes the PIL 1.

To shed some light on this subject, we did a quick poll on our Facebook page and received few hundreds votes in one day (Poll results). Although this may not necessary represent the entire population, but the result gives a clear indication that 85% of our readers support the implementation of PIL1.

    What a flawed survey. Of course the readers of your facebook page will be full of wealthy, business-minded, car driving people who would welcome the increased high-end property development that is associated with the PTMP/PIL project. Very misleading to suggest 85% of Penangites support PIL. Shame on you! If we posted the same survey on the Penang Forum Facebook page, what do you think the results would suggest?

    September 3rd, 2018 at 16:58 | #41

    I am a Penangnite who loves Penang and Malaysia. I am not from any NGO. I want PIL 1 to be cancelled and my reasons are :-
    1. PIL 1 highway will cut through hills (4 tunnels). Soil scientist Dr Kam Suan Pheng expalains that the PIL highway tunnels will cut through three fault (crack) lines in the granite sub-surface. One of the fault lines is near the Kek Lok Si temple and Air Itam dam. Our Air Itam dam is an earth dam, not a concrete dam. If the soil is weak and if water bursts out from the dam, imagine the disaster this can bring to the inhabitants nearby. Nobody wants his homeland to be destroyed by this type of occurrence. Nobody even wants to live in the fear of losing his life when this strikes. It can strike suddenly and unexpectedly both during construction and after completion.

    2. PIL 1 is not a good and long term solution to free traffic congestion. Somehow the highway and definitely the interchange and its feeder roads will be congested. Furthermore, it takes time (years and years) to complete the tunnels and elevated highway, and eventually we are back to square one (jam and jam and jam). We should spend this huge sum of money (RM8 billions) wisely by implementing a better option (our nation is in very tight budget now), by undertaking thorough research and referring to transport plans successfully implemented by other countries. An integrated public transport system consisting of bus and modern electric tram should be looked at. It’s not only cheaper, it’s greener for the environment and it can be implemented immediately and a large section of the society including both the rich and poor, people of all ages, people who don’t have a car can benefit from it. Its benefit, if well planned, can be long lasting. Besides, it is very cost effective and therefore a great saving to the nation! The government should look into this option and study the implementation of it before building tunnels and elevated highways like PIL 1!

    3. After the PIL 1 is built, who will pay for the costs to maintain it? The people! Government’s money is from the people! We will still have to incur high maintenance costs even though in years to come, it is no longer solving the traffic congestion problem effectively! On the other hand, if we fail to maintain it, what happened in Italy recently where their elevated highway collapsed due to lack of maintenance and lives sacrificed may also happen here!

    4. If one does not think of how the PIL 1 will damage the environment (which is irreversible!), the hills, the rivers and the landscape of our beautiful Penang Island, please take a moment to think of lives that may be sacrificed due to hills slides, landslides, underground water flow movement and floods. It will be too late to cry over spoil milk.

    5. If PIL 1 is built, we Penangnites will no longer be able to exercise in Youth Park (City Park) and Taman Jajar Sungai Ara due to the air/noise pollution and these 2 parks are our only 2 major parks on Penang Island and we cannot afford to lose them. These parks have been used by many people and saved many lives. By building PIL 1, the Penangnites will be deprived of a very basic humanity and community need, and this deprivation extends to many who frequently visit the parks, whether they live near or far from the parks.

    Conclusion

    1. Why want to risk the loss of human lives, loss of homelands, loss of nature’s beauty, loss of humanity and community basic need, loss of green environment, and waste money on PIL 1 which is not effective as a long term solution?

    2. Why not implement a greener, cheaper, faster, safer and effective option?

  42. Oh nice
    September 4th, 2018 at 10:01 | #42

    @Alicia
    ya right…you failed mention that that Dr Kam is also a representative of Penang forum. The same organisation that is at war with the state government and had complained to UNESCO so that George Town ‘s heritage status could be removed.

  43. Alicia
    September 4th, 2018 at 13:36 | #43

    PIL 1 is truly not a good option to solve traffic congestion problem on a long term basis.
    If the relevant authority still insists on implementing PIL 1, why?

    Why won’t the authority concerned cancel PIL 1 and conduct feasibility study on other option?

    What exactly does the relevant authority wish to achieve with PIL 1?

    What actually is the goal for PIL 1 and can this goal be achieved successfully?

    Perhaps, PIL 1 provides short sighted and short term benefit. BUT WITHOUT A SINGLE DOUBT, the irreversible damage caused by PIL 1 will be felt by the residents of Penang and even the visitors of Penang, for now and for many many more generations to come.

    September 4th, 2018 at 13:40 | #45

    @Alicia

    I think no one can dispute the criticism you raised from 1 to 5. They are all valid concerns. The increase of population is the price to pay for progress (or creating more jobs). When population increases, you need more roads as well as LRT. So that’s what is being proposed now. Then you said “Why not implement a greener, cheaper, faster, safer and effective option?”, so what would that be? Please don’t say tram, that’s crap. Tram ways will eat up current road capacity, further exacerbating the traffic situation.

    @Oh nice

    Whether Dr Kam is a rep of Penang Forum or not, whether someone has complained to UNESCO or not, whether LGE should be trialled or not, has no bearing on the FACTS that justify PIL or otherwise. Stop taking sides, and start using your brains, if you have one that is.

    By all means, we are waiting for this project to be completed.

    Some had a concern for fault lines and there is an article in freemalaysiatoday dated 1st Sept to counter this argument.

    Some had said PIL is not viable as it is better to implement integrated bus transport and electric tram.Well,I say the state government has done a thorough survey and study on PIL1 and it is the best way to solve traffic congestion.

    As maintanence cost is concern, I am a taxpayer both individual and company level.I don’t mind my tax paid to government goes to maintaining PIL1

    In any construction projects, there could be fatal accidents which are unprecedented.As long as the contractor exercise due diligence, any fatal or untoward accidents can be avoided.

    In Penang,Youth Park is not the only place to exercise.There are Botanical Garden,Gurney Wharf(coming soon), Bukit Dumbar, Relau Park and many more smaller parks.

    To PM Muhyiddin, please cancel this wasteful PIL project. Many years ago the DAP opposed the similar BN-proposed PORR project and I started supporting them. It is shocking to me that the DAP is now pushing this project as if penang Island really needs it. I have a personal interest in this project not being carried out as my apartment block on Jalan Gangsa will be directly below a part of the highway, which will be built on a steep hillside. I fear for the safety of my family and the other people in our apartment building. How many landslides have occurred due to hill cutting on the island these past few years? The highway will also create noise and air pollution and destroy a beautiful green hill where monkeys and other wildlife make their homes.
    Instead of trying to develop the island further, it would be better to focus development efforts on the mainland. Stop all further development on the island, especially where hill cutting is required. I am happy that the DAP is out of the federal government even though I supported them in the last GE. I hope that the new government will be wiser when they weigh the penang government’s requests for approval of all silly and wasteful projects.

    @HA Yeap
    I’m with you on this one.
    I’m glad that we have a change in federal government otherwise this monstrous project will continue.

    Building on hill slope and bombing the hill is a big no-no.
    Please preserve our greenery!

    What we need is better road conditions and better traffic management.

    We need more green parks. Overseas country like Australia have plentiful of parks everywhere which makes them the best liveable city in the world. Make people walk and cycle instead of taking cars, we need more walkable walkways and more cycling lanes
