Perbadanan PR1MA Malaysia (PR1MA) under the Local Government Development Ministry will be building some 4,000 high-rise homes in Penang over the next five years.

The agency will carry out residential and mixed development projects on its two plots of land measuring 121.4ha in the state.

The projects have an estimated gross development value of RM1.25bil, according to its statement.

It also said the mixed development projects would have sustainability features meant to provide inclusiveness, safety, resilience and liveability.

These efforts to provide affordable housing, which also supports Sustainable Development Goals, are in line with the Federal Government’s target under the 12th Malaysia Plan to build 500,000 affordable homes.

PR1MA chief executive officer Datuk Seri Mohd Nazri Md Shariff said, “We realise there is an urgent need for more affordable housing in the country.

“We aim to develop more high-quality housing in Penang and other strategic locations nationwide.”

There are currently three PR1MA projects in Penang comprising 3,867 affordable units.

The projects are Residensi Pauh Permai as well as Residensi Bukit Gelugor Phase 1 and Phase 2.

The Residensi Pauh Permai project in Permatang Pauh, which has 1,017 units, was completed in September 2021.

It received an award last year for the best mass market high-rise development in the northern region.

Residensi Bukit Gelugor Phase 1 is slated for completion in the third quarter of 2025 and Phase 2 in the third quarter of 2026.

Mohd Nazri said PR1MA was not only responsible for building residential projects but also the socio-economic development of the PR1MA community.

“This will indirectly add value to the eco-system,” he said in the statement.

Mohd Nazri had earlier accompanied Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming on a visit to Taman Bagan Jaya people’s housing project (PPR) in Butterworth, where residents would get free Internet service for nine months under the ongoing Jendela@PPR national digital infrastructure initiative.

Elna PCB Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Elna PCB) is achieving another milestone with the expansion of a new plant in central Seberang Perai here.

Elna PCB, one of the key printed circuit board (PCB) players in Penang, is set to invest about RM1 billion; which includes the plant, equipment and machinery.

Established in 1994, Elna PCB became part of the PSA Group in Taiwan, following a joint venture between PSA Group and Japan-based Elna Printed Circuit in 2018.

The expansion works started in December last year and are expected to be completed within a year.

Elna PCB president Ian Yang said the new plant, which will be located next to the existing plant in Lorong Perusahaan 4 at the Perai Free Industrial Zone, was designed to manufacture PCBs for the usage of automotive, server, networking, laptop, desktop, and consumer electronic device products.

“Upon completion, the new plant is expected to create an additional 1,000 employment opportunities to support the ecosystem.

“We are optimistic that, upon the completion of the expansion project, we will be able to achieve a five-fold business growth from our current business size.

“We chose Penang as our present and future home as Penang’s competitive edge lies in its skilled workforce, robust market, and supply chain.

“Our local suppliers have been very supportive and we wish to strengthen our ties with them by enabling more localisation activities.

“In addition, the state’s top-notch infrastructure and the strong government support are also the key reasons for us to invest in Penang,” he said in his speech before the groundbreaking ceremony yesterday.

The expansion project would see a six-storey factory unit built on a 10,289sq m land area.

Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) (investment promotion and facilitation) deputy chief executive officer Sivasuriyamoorthy Sundara Raja said Mida was optimistic that Elna PCB’s latest reinvestment would enhance the transfer of technology and knowledge, as well as foster more local supply chain partnerships, leading to an even stronger industry ecosystem in Malaysia.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said Elna PCB has a presence of nearly 30 years in Penang.

“Its decision to expand is a testament to Penang‘s sustainable location for investments.

“I believe Penang’s robust industrial ecosystem, strong talent pool, and conducive business environment are among the key factors for Elna PCB to deepen its roots in the state,” he said in his speech.

Chow said that Penang had been recognised as one of the key players in the global semiconductor industry and other electronic component manufacturing, including the much essential, PCB manufacturing.

“The growing demand for digitalisation is seen as one of the key drivers for PCB, being a vital component of many of today’s most advanced technologies.

“Driven by Penang’s position as the country’s leading Electrical & Electronics (E&E) hub, the state continues to be a key pillar of Malaysia’s external trade.

“Penang topped the nation’s list in 2021 with an export value of RM354 billion recorded.

“The external trade momentum in Penang had persisted into 2022 with a 27% year-on-year spike on the export value, which reached an all-time high of RM452 billion in the said year. It represented 29% of the country’s total,” he added.

He highlighted that on the investment front, Penang was also among the top contributors in the country. The state clocked in an all-time high of RM76 billion in its approved manufacturing investments in 2021.

“From January to September 2022, Penang garnered RM9 billion of approved manufacturing investments, among which 53% was contributed by E&E products; which represented 22% of the country’s total in E&E. This further strengths the state’s position as the Silicon Valley of the East,” he said.

Chow welcomed industry leaders to take advantage of what Penang has to offer.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to Mida and InvestPenang for their synergistic efforts in engaging investors and facilitating project implementations,” he said.

Imagine taking in the peaceful atmosphere of a public park and checking out the world of art from a whole new perspective – both at the same time!

Visitors to the Armenian Park can do so now, thanks to the newly-launched ARmenian Park project.

A collaboration between Penang Art District and Perk Reality, this project offers visitors the opportunity to appreciate art using Augmented Reality (AR) technology.

Penang Tourism and Creative Economy (Petace) Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said while there were several private initiatives which allow shoppers in shopping malls to experience AR technology in Malaysia, Armenian Park was believed to be the first AR park in the country.

“Armenian Street is one of the popular tourist spots in Penang. Integrating AR art in Armenian Park can maximise the tourist experience and add value to the destination itself.

“Through AR technology, we can provide a new channel for artists, both local and international, to showcase their work. AR technology allows us to overcome obstacles related to art exhibitions, such as geographical constraints, physical space limitations, or operation hours of a physical art gallery or museum.

“AR makes it easier for artists to reach a wider audience. Their work can now be experienced in any location, as long as the viewer has a smartphone or a tablet,” he said in his speech before the launching ceremony of the ARmenian Park project yesterday.

Yeoh added that the Penang government had been adopting holistic methods which emphasised sustainability and personalisation to enhance the travel experience through digital technology.

The ARmenian Park project is supported by the Penang government, Petace, Penang Island City Council and the Penang2030 team.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow lauded the success of the ARmenian Park project.

“You are changing the name of our park… from Armenian Park to ARmenian Park,” Chow said in jest.

“I believe that you have chosen Armenian Park (to kickstart the project) because it has the letters ‘AR’ in its name.

“Well…we have two or three more parks with ‘AR’ in their names, and you can work on them next.

“We have the Areca Park in Sungai Pinang, and the Ara River Linear Park (Taman Jajar Sungai Ara) in Sungai Ara.

“So, you can continue to work on the ‘AR’ parks in Penang. You are welcome to explore other (potential) ‘AR’ parks in the state,” he said, receiving applause from the visitors at Armenian Park.

Chow said the Armenian Park is now an ‘open-air gallery’.

“The adoption of AR technology brings together the physical and digital worlds through new and exciting ways, allowing visitors to experience art from a different perspective.

“The AR technology can also provide visitors with additional information about the art on display. This helps visitors to better understand and appreciate the work of the artists.

“Art plays a significant role in the preservation of a country’s cultural heritage. In Penang, art is an essential aspect of our cultural identity, reflecting our values, beliefs, and heritage,” he said.

Chow added that the AR technology in Armenian Park broadened the possibilities of exhibiting art in places other than galleries or museums.

“We believe that this AR park in Armenian Street will establish itself as a new landmark for Penang., attracting visitors to experience the magic of AR technology and art.

“We hope that this park will inspire creativity, and innovation, and bring people together to experience something truly special; in line with the Penang2030 vision,” he said.

It is learnt that Penang Art District has provided funding of RM30,000 for the purchase and installation of AR technology in Armenian Park, with Perk Reality providing service and maintenance of the technology.

Chow thanked Yeoh, Penang Art District and Perk Reality for making this project a success.

Also present were Chow’s wife Tan Lean Kee, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, Perk Reality founder Aboud Fares, Taipei Economy and Cultural Office (cultural division) director Ellen Ko, and Penang Art District project manager Kenny Ng.

Ng said there were 19 ‘scan boards’ in Armenian Park for visitors to scan with their smartphones or tablets; after which, they can experience the magic of AR and view the content.

“We will change the content (artworks) monthly, providing a platform for more artists to showcase their work,” Ng said.

Visitors need to download and turn on the Perk Reality application to experience the AR technology.

The app is available on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.
