The relocation of SJKC Kuang Yu from Kuala Muda, Penaga to Batu Kawan will become a reality soon, caretaker Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said.

After a series of fundraising events were held to raise funds for the school, Chow said the construction works for the school are set to take place by the end of this year.

“There are a lot of challenges along the way, but we can now look forward to the works to construct the school soon.

“We expect the school building in Batu Kawan to be completed in a few years before it is opened for students’ intake in early 2027.

“The collaborative efforts of the private sector, particularly established corporations, have played their part in supporting the school in its relocation.

“Other contributors, including the community and the education groups, have also contributed to this smooth relocation process,” Chow, who is Batu Kawan MP, said after witnessing Paramount Corporation Berhad’s presentation of a mock cheque for RM300,000 to SJK (C) Kuang Yu in Bukit Tambun yesterday.

Road projects in Bukit Tambun set to ease traffic congestion

bukit-tambun-road-project

Several small-scale road projects in Bukit Tambun are scheduled for completion in November this year.

Caretaker Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the RM2.4 million road projects are the latest projects approved by the Economy Ministry recently.

“The projects primarily involve road widening works in Jalan Bukit Tambun and road upgrading works near Bukit Tambun Selatan Toll Plaza.

“The road improvements include road lines repainting along the Jalan Bukit Tambun, Jalan Pathau, Jalan Paboi, Jalan Ipoh-Butterworth, Jalan Transkrian-Bukit Panchor and Jalan Transkrin. Other complementary works will also be undertaken.

“All of these projects are expected to start in August after the state Public Works Department (JKR) has appointed the contractor for these projects.

“Once completed, these projects are expected to ease the traffic congestion in the areas,” Chow told reporters during his working visit near Bukit Tambun Selatan Toll Plaza in Bukit Tambun today.

Also present were caretaker state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin and former Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik.

On another working visit at Bandar Tasek Mutiara in Bukit Tambun, Chow announced that the state government is in the process of acquiring a piece of land between Jalan Tasek Mutiara 10 and Jalan Hijauan Hills 1.

He explained that the acquisition is to build a bypass to connect Jalan Tasek Mutiara 10 and Jalan Hijauan Hills 1.

“This is important to enhance accessibility to the schools in the neighbourhood.

“Previously, parents staying in the neighbourhood have complained that they have to use a longer route via the main road to reach the school, which takes around 30 minutes despite the schools being less than 1km away.

“So, once the land takeover has been completed, JKR will then start the construction work to build the bypass,” he said.

Penang residents anticipate commencement of island LRT project

Property News/ 25 July 2023 No comments

Penang residents, especially those living on the island, are waiting with bated breath for the commencement of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) project at the end of the year.

A check by Bernama found that the public was excited about the project and confident that the LRT will ease the long-standing traffic congestion in Penang.

Farahlina Zainol, 32, has been waiting for the LRT service to start not only because it will ease the traffic congestion but will help her to save on travelling expenses getting to her workplace in Komtar.

Farahlina, who rides a motorcycle and sometimes drives her car to work daily from Bayan Lepas, near here, said she would always get caught in traffic.

“Going by newspaper reports, the LRT route will be from the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas to Komtar, and if this is so, then I will surely use the LRT to get to work as it is convenient.

“When I lived in Kuala Lumpur, I used the LRT to go to work. It helps to avoid traffic jams. Now that I am in Penang, the traffic is so congested… the buses are packed, so the LRT is the solution to the problem,” she told Bernama.

She added that taking the LRT was also safer than riding her motorbike.

College student Neoh Zhe Chung, 22, said the LRT was more convenient than other modes of public transport and would save him time and the hassle of looking for parking spaces.

“I usually use buses or e-hailing services but am encountering problems with these. The bus is usually late (due to traffic jams) whereas the e-hailing rates have shot up. So, the LRT will be the new preferred mode of transport for residents in Penang. I live in Tanjung Tokong and understand that it is one of the LRT routes,” he said.

R. Kallani, 65, who lives in Relau and is a long-time user of the bus services in Penang is looking forward to using the LRT services.

“My younger brother lives in Kuala Lumpur and he goes to work on the LRT. So, when I visit him there, I too use the LRT. We want this here too as the traffic jams here are getting worse,” she said.

Meanwhile, Pung Taw Lim, 53, is thankful that the federal and state governments have approved the LRT project which is also one of the efforts towards a green state.

The LRT in Penang is expected to start earlier after the federal and state governments agreed to build the LRT depot on existing land compared to the previous plan which was to build it on the reclaimed south of Penang islands.

According to initial plans, the first phase of the LRT Line would start at the Penang International Airport and end at Komtar, but now it has been extended to Tanjung Bungah.

Twenty-seven multi-storey stations will be built along the 29km route under the first phase, and for the next phase, the government hopes to extend the project to Butterworth and Kepala Batas.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the federal government agreed to allocate more funds in a large scheme to expedite the Penang LRT project to solve the traffic congestion problem.
