The government has announced seven mega projects costing over RM3bil for Kedah for development in the state to bring it on equal footing with more progressive states.

Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali (pic) announced that the projects are the Kulim International Airport (KXP); a manufacturing industries and logistics hub in Sidam near Kulim; two phases of the Northern Corridor highway project over a 70km stretch; a digital library in Alor Setar; a petrochemical industrial park in Gurun and the Kasih Ibu Darul Aman (Kida) programme.

As for the two phases of the Northern Corridor Highway, the first phase is from Bandar Baharu (Kulim) to Sungai Petani and the second phase from Bandar Baharu to the Sultan Abdul Halim Bridge in Penang, at an estimated cost of RM1.7bil, he told a press conference after a special meeting with federal and state government officers and staff here on Tuesday (March 19).

Also present were Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Mahathir and Kedah State Secretary Datuk Ammar Shaikh Mahmood Naim.

Mohamed Azmin said the KXP project will cost RM1.6bil; the manufacturing industries and logistics hub, RM300mil; the digital library, RM15mil and the petrochemical industrial park, RM2mil.

So obvious lah, who is the mentri besar of Kedah ? A few decades ago, there was also a big plan to develop Pulau Langkawi to replace (kill?) Penang hence, the duty-free port !

Good news. Now us the “second class” penangites (because we live on the mainland) can at least taste some development albeit not directly courtesy of our neighbouring state. Looking forward to jam free journey to kulim to take our flights.
I’m smiling ear to ear right now.

Good for both states. Plus part of Kelantan and Perak. Pretty wise moves.

Will the proposed Kulim International Airport (KIA) be another white elephant? Airlines will not service routes without minimum load factors. What is the populations size around that area and how often do they take flights. Are there any attractions there apart from the industries to attract people to fly in? Do consider wisely.

Look at the cost to build Kulim airport and its highway infrastructure. Then compare with its future return in term of passengers/freight volume and airport utilization. Most likely the analysis return negative in the first 10-20 years. If the government still in huge debt and this investment does not return positive impact, it is like BN government creating ECRL which may not be needed and already know the sustaining will be a burden with huge loss

Stupid argument. You fly to Kulim to visit Penang. It’s less than 50km away. Look at KLIA. Did the move of KLIA reduce the ppl visit KL? No!
Penang ppl keep talking like they want to advance but mentality like kampung boy.

very good news….as someone who is living on mainland penang,i want some spillover effect over here as well…even though these projects are planned for kedah, but still we second class penangites(living on mainland) can experience the economic developments as we are living not far from kulim and sungai petani area…what the island part of penang needs now is the paired roads and tunnel together with proper traffic management.

Now Azmin Ali said it is 100% private fund. MBI will fund it as the airport will be near Desaku project and its surrounding has lots of MBI land for development. So, this is another land swap for project thing. LOL

There is no one interest to invest at a malay kampung….kulim and alor setar was a dead city…more 10 years still the same

Penang ppl need to start realizing that if you aim to be a big world class city then it’s time for you to move the airport away. The island is so darn stuck and you still want the airport there. Look at all the big cities in the world. Which city has an airport within 20+km from the downtown?

It is obviously a win win situation but what penang ppl want could be building it just at the border may be bertam so it is still “penang”

      March 24th, 2019 at 09:14 | #17

Bertam is acceptable but there are more factory in Kulim which makes better sense. I think Penang ppl want it on the island or not moving at all.
