Reclamation works for Penang’s Silicon Island project have surpassed the 200-acre mark, marking steady advancement in the state’s largest land reclamation initiative. The development spans 2,300 acres in total, divided into two phases — 1,260 acres in Phase One and 1,040 acres in Phase Two.

To commemorate the milestone, Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib and his consort, Toh Puan Raja Noora Ashikin Raja Abdullah, visited the project site, crossing to Silicon Island via a 378m temporary steel bridge at Permatang Damar Laut. They were accompanied by state Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, Deputy State Secretary (Development) Mohamed Abdul Rahman, Southwest District police chief ACP Sazalee Adam and other officials, including representatives from Penang Infrastructure Corporation Sdn Bhd (PIC), Silicon Island Development Sdn Bhd (SIDSB) and SRS Consortium.

During the visit, the delegation was briefed on upcoming facilities that will shape the island’s future. Among them is a 380m marine viaduct, a key link within the Pan Island Link 2A (PIL2A) highway project. Scheduled for completion by January 2029, the viaduct will feature four lanes in each direction, enhancing connectivity between Penang island’s southern coast, Silicon Island and the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge.

Plans are also underway for a 0.8ha Matang Food Court and Community Hub, which will include a Village Community Management Council (MPKK) hall, a Fishermen’s One-Stop Service Centre, food stalls, restaurants and storage facilities. To support the initial water needs of Silicon Island, a suction tank and pump house will be constructed near the food court, with work expected to begin in October and finish by the end of 2027.

PIC chief executive officer Datuk Seri Farizan Darus described the reclamation progress as an encouraging indicator of the project’s momentum. He said the initiative is designed to underpin Penang’s long-term growth, combining infrastructure, sustainable development practices and community-oriented facilities. “Every element — from the marine viaduct to the community facilities — has been integrated to serve both economic and social needs,” he explained.

Farizan also highlighted the Social Impact Management Plan (SIMP) as part of the project’s commitment to local communities. To date, RM11.7 million in ex gratia payments has been distributed to 791 eligible fishermen. In addition, 118 of 295 active boat-owning fishermen have received new boats and engines under an assistance scheme, representing an expenditure of nearly RM10 million.

“These initiatives are intended to provide financial security and modern equipment for fishermen, ensuring that they can continue their livelihood more sustainably and efficiently,” he said.

With reclamation steadily progressing and community measures underway, Silicon Island is moving towards its vision of becoming a hub for investment, infrastructure and inclusive development in Penang.
