The construction of Penang’s first age-friendly neighbourhood park — the Lengkok Nipah Neighbourhood Park in Taman Lip Sin, Bayan Lepas — is now 99% complete, marking a key milestone for the local community.

According to Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Chan Soon Aun, only minor finishing touches remain before the park is officially opened to the public.
“Major components of the park have been completed, with only minor cosmetic works ongoing. We expect full completion within this month, and the opening ceremony is planned for November,” he said.

Spanning nearly one acre, the project is a joint initiative between MBPP and the Bayan Baru parliamentary constituency office, developed at a cost of RM700,000. The park aims to create an inclusive and sustainable environment for residents of all ages, especially senior citizens.

Chan shared that many residents, particularly the elderly, have already started using the facilities and expressed pride in having such a community-focused space nearby.

MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran previously emphasised that elderly residents often face challenges such as mobility issues and lack of age-friendly infrastructure.
“This park aims to address these challenges by promoting active living and community well-being,” he said.

Designed with accessibility and comfort in mind, the park features pedestrian walkways, playground equipment, exercise stations, a stage, plaza, amphitheatre, benches, and wheelchair-friendly pathways, along with green landscaping and park lighting.

Once completed, the Lengkok Nipah Neighbourhood Park will stand as a model for inclusive urban design, encouraging active lifestyles and stronger community connections in Penang.
