Getting between Bayan Lepas and Batu Kawan might soon become a lot easier. The Penang government, together with Rapid Penang, is exploring a new CAT Bridge Route that would link both major industrial zones across the Penang Second Bridge.

According to Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik, the idea is still in its early stages, but if it takes off, it could offer a practical and affordable way for thousands of workers to travel between the island and mainland every day — and help cut down on traffic in the process.

“This route is meant to serve people who commute daily between the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone and the Batu Kawan Industrial Park,” Goh said during a discussion session held in Batu Kawan. “It’s about making travel easier, greener, and more reliable for everyone.”

The focus group brought together government representatives, Rapid Penang officials, and industry players to talk through the plan. The goal: to understand what commuters actually need before finalising details like bus frequency, timing, and stop locations.

Goh mentioned that he’s been pushing for a similar connection since 2018, but the earlier proposal didn’t go through because of low ridership. This time, the team hopes to design the service based on real data and direct input from employers and commuters.

He also encouraged companies to play their part by offering transport subsidies to staff, saying this could make public transport more appealing and help reduce the number of private cars on the road. “When employers support public transport use, everyone benefits — less traffic, less stress, and cleaner air,” he said.

If the project is approved, students will be able to ride for free, making it easier for young commuters who travel between the two areas.

Nurul Asyikin Abd Rahman from the State Economic Planning Division added that the team is reviewing all proposed pick-up and drop-off points to ensure convenience and encourage more people to hop on board. “We’re looking at about 1,000 daily riders as a start — especially those working in Batu Kawan but living in Bayan Lepas, and vice versa,” she said.

The CAT Bridge Route, once finalised, could become another step forward in Penang’s push for a more connected, sustainable transport system — one that moves people efficiently while keeping the state’s roads less congested.
