It was a joyful Sunday morning for those living in Air Itam as the Penang government officially announced the opening of the long-awaited Desa Mawar neighbourhood park here.

Measuring 6,855sq ft, the park was upgraded and installed with various attractive facilities for the people to enjoy.

The construction works at the state-owned land commenced in May last year and were completed in eight months.

It cost a total of RM686,470 which was borne by the state government.

Once an open space but now turned into a friendly park, it is well equipped with facilities such as charging ports using the solar system, a walkway for visitors, exercise equipment, a children’s playground and others.

The charging ports were made out of recycled items, courtesy of the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Landscape Department.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was present to officiate the opening, said while such parks were crucial for the well-being of the community, they complemented the state’s capacity of garnering huge investment figures.

“As this initiative directly falls in line with the Penang2030 vision of ‘A Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation’, there is a potential of attracting more foreign investors to our state in the future.

“This is evident when our state achieved a record-breaking total approved manufacturing investment of RM76.2 billion in 2021.

“We have greatly contributed to the nation’s economy as a whole, and we will continue to do so because we have the means and capabilities of doing so.

“Meanwhile, it is important to also realise that we will be an ageing society in a few years. So, such parks are crucial for those 60 years and above to keep fit and stay healthy,” Chow said during his speech at the Desa Mawar neighbourhood park opening ceremony in Air Itam today.

He also thanked the MBPP Landscape Department for incorporating solar panel technology in its initiatives to accelerate the low-carbon city agenda in the state.

Meanwhile, MBPP secretary A. Rajendran said a total of 4,977 plants and flowers of various types were planted at the park.

“This project is part of MBPP’s vision of meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is in line with the Penang2030 vision,” he said.

Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng, who was also present, hoped that the community in Air Itam would take good care of the park and not vandalise the area, which he regarded as the blood and sweat of many agencies coming together to materialise the opening today.

Also present during the ceremony were state Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo and Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh.

Penang will see the establishment of its first-ever ultra-modern logistics commercial complex in Bayan Lepas next year.

Titijaya Land Berhad and DHL Supply Chain (M) Sdn yesterday signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to develop the complex at a 20-acre mixed development site in Bayan Lepas.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who witnessed the signing ceremony at Ascott Gurney, said he looked forward to the first-of-its-kind facility in the state that would be fully equipped with automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) robotics technology.

“Congratulations to both Titijaya Land Berhad and DHL Supply Chain (M) Sdn Bhd for choosing Penang as the place to expand business operations.

“It is a great benefit for us. We welcome this development and hope that other conglomerates can also explore their business opportunities here.

“We will continue to support the business investments by locals as well as multinational and international businesses.

“On top of that, we applaud the collaboration between these two companies, which will provide the semiconductor logistic solution to the Electrical and Electronics (E&E) industry in Bayan Lepas.

“I look forward to the completion of this project in June 2023,” Chow said.

Among those present at the ceremony were guest of honour Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, state Trade, Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain and state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin.

Chow believed that both companies were well-positioned to materialise the project, in which construction works were scheduled to begin in June this year.

“We should strive with our proven track record in making Penang the premier choice for investments,” he said.

Titijaya Land Berhad group managing director Lim Poh Yit said the partnership with the world’s largest logistics company would open up more opportunities for them on similar projects.

“This marks our first venture into a premium semiconductor facility,” he said.

DHL Supply Chain Malaysia managing director Mario Lorenz said the growing demand and growth in the manufacturing and E&E industry and the capability of Titijaya Land Berhad were the main reasons for their collaboration.

“It will open up more growth opportunities for both companies,” he said.

Asia Green Group’s affordable homes project, called The Zen, is progressing well and is expected to be ready by early next year, state Housing, Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said.

Jagdeep and several staff members from the Penang Housing Board, as well as architects and representatives from Asia Green, today visited the construction site at Persiaran Bayan Mutiara in Gelugor to monitor the progress of the project.

“I understand that this project is now 60 per cent completed, and is expected to be completed by February or March next year.

“It is understood that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the construction industry was also badly affected, causing a standstill to many residential development projects in Penang.

“We have certainly made progress since the outbreak in 2020, and despite the adversities, it is good to witness that work at such affordable homes project is ongoing.

“As this is a mixed development project, there are also condominium units as well. But, as for the affordable ones, which measures 850sq ft per unit, I understand all 1,200 units have been sold out.

“The state would like to thank players from the private sector for materialising such projects for the benefits of Penangites.

“Having a shelter over our heads is a basic fundamental human right.

“The state will continue to deliver affordable homes so that no one is left behind when it comes to owning a home, especially for first-time home buyers,” Jagdeep said during his visit to The Zen at Persiaran Bayan Mutiara in Gelugor today.

Future owners of The Zen can enjoy facilities such as a swimming pool, recreational space and others.

Separately, Jagdeep said as of now, a total of 133,313 units of various affordable homes are in multiple stages as follows, 38,190 have been built, 19,640 being built and 74,956 to be built.

“We have reached about 60.6 per cent of our target of delivering 220,000 units by 2030,” he added.

“Out of the 220,000 units, I have instructed my staff at the Housing Board to make accessible 10 per cent of it under the Rent-To-Own scheme for individuals that meet the criteria set.

“There are many who still can’t afford to buy affordable homes, so this is one way of making sure everyone gets to own a home at the end of the day,” Jagdeep added.

Among those present during the visit were Penang Housing Board chief operational officer Mohd Fauzy Mohd Yusoff, chief business officer Fakhurrazi Ibnu Omar and Asia Green’s director Tan Li Mei.
