Penang ready to move into Phase 2 of NRP by next week.

Penang is confident of moving into Phase Two of the National Recovery Plan by next week when 10 percent of its population get their second dose vaccination, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

He said by this Wednesday or Thursday, the state should be able to achieve the 10 percent target.

Chow too is optimistic of Penang receiving 591,523 doses of vaccine under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme this month and August.

“The Federal Government has fixed 10 percent of adult population as a threshold to be achieved before each state could move to Phase Two,” Chow said.

He was speaking to representatives of 11 trade organisations in a virtual meeting that was organised by the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers Penang (FMM Penang) on the ‘Status of the Vaccination in Penang’ yesterday.

The Federal Government later on the same day announced five states had already fulfilled three indicators of the NRP to move to the Phase Two with the opening of more economic sector. Each phase will have their own standard operating procedures and activities allowed or disallowed.

Chow said Penang’s next objective is to see the 60 and above age group completes the vaccination process as soon as possible before it moves on to target the 60 and below age group this month.

He said Penang would be seeing better days ahead as it has been promised more supply of vaccines this month.

In fact, he said now is case of a balancing act between the vaccination centres’ capabilities and also the vaccines that the state would be able to receive.

“We will see a huge spike in number of vaccine supply. These two months will be critical,” Chow added.

For both FMM Penang chairman Datuk Jimmy Ong and immediate past president Datuk Seri Ooi Eng Hock, the reason FMM Penang organised the meeting yesterday was because of the huge challenges ahead of them and they would like to know when all the employees of SMEs would be vaccinated.

The meeting was a fruitful one as Chow and Miti Penang director Jegan Subramaniam took questions from a few of the participants regarding the public-private partnership Covid-19 Industry Immunisation Programme (Pikas) and vaccination centres.

Among those who took part in the virtual meeting were state Entrepreneurial Development, Trade and Industry Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Halim, state Agrotech and Food Security, Rural Development and Health Committee chairman Dr Norlela Ariffin and Jegan.

Authorities tracking down those who fled Taman Nagasari in SPT before the enforcement of EMCO

Business owners, workers and residents who fled Taman Nagasari before the enforcement of the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) today, have been urged to return home immediately to enable health workers to carry out community screening more effectively.

According to Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) mayor Datuk Rozali Mohamud, irresponsible people there have left their homes after EMCO was announced for the area on Friday.

“While authorities are making preparations to enforce the EMCO, irresponsible people have left their homes to seek shelter elsewhere. Such action is highly irresponsible.

“We are warning all those who fled the area to return home immediately, failing which, stern action can be taken against them for flouting the law,” he said yesterday.

On Friday, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that 10 new localities in Sabah, Sarawak, Kedah and Penang will be placed under the EMCO, starting tomorrow (July 4) until July 17.

Ismail Sabri had said that the EMCO was decided upon following a risk assessment by the Covid-19 technical committee.

In Penang, the affected area is Taman Nagasari in the Seberang Prai Tengah district.

MBSP, Rozali said, had a full record of all business owners and residents in Taman Nagasari.

He added that they included 244 industrial units, 66 commercial units, 295 terrace houses and 335 units of flats, bringing the overall total to 940 units.

“We (MBSP), together with the police, the Armed Forces and Health Ministry will go all out to track down those irresponsible people who flee prior to the EMCO,” he added.

Meanwhile, Rozali said the implementation of the EMCO would make it easier for community screening to be carried out for the purpose of contact tracing and to identify Covid-19 cases speedily and more effectively.

Penang recorded 351 positive Covid-19 cases on Friday, with 268 cases in the Seberang Prai Tengah district alone.

There were 111 positive Covid-19 cases in Mukim 6 in the Seberang Prai Tengah district itself.

NRP increase chances for BNM to cut interest rate

The Covid-19 pandemic and tightening restrictions under the National Recovery Plan (NRP) could see an increasing chance for Bank Negara to cut the overnight policy rate (OPR) by 25 basis points at its July 8 meeting.

Wellian Wiranto, (pic) economist, global treasury – research and strategy at OCBC Bank, said that in the previous monetary policy committee meeting, the central bank had projected a sanguine outlook because any lockdown had left business activities largely unfettered.

“With one tighter set of restrictions now being piled on top of already tightened measures, that assumption is sadly looking less tenable by the day, ” he said.

He said it has been more than a month since Malaysia enacted its phase one restriction, which saw a curtailment of most business activities across the country.

Selangor is reportedly where the virus has been spreading most stubbornly, accounting for a third of the national tally in recent days.

As a result, the government had tightened the measures even further for much of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
