Esplanade seawall project to be completed by Q1 next year

The seawall restoration project at the Esplanade would be completed in the first quarter of next year while the Fort Cornwallis moat reinstatement project, which would be implemented next year, would be completed in 2024. YB Jagdeep mentioned this during a press conference on the current status of the Penang Hill Special Area Plan and the George Town World Heritage Site near the Clock Tower in Light Street yesterday.

These projects come under the George Town Conservation Development Corporation (GTCDC), a partnership between the Penang State Government and Think City.

To complement the seawall restoration project, he said there would be a Seawall Linear Garden, an open space adjacent to the seawall project, for the public social wellbeing.

Also present at the press conference were the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) secretary Datuk Addnan Mohd Razali, Think City managing director Hamdan Abdul Majeed and Penang State Heritage Commissioner Rosli Nor.

Hamdan said: “We are pushing forward with various projects in mind as YB Jagdeep had highlighted. We will ensure that these projects will be completed in quarter one next year progressively and when the recovery (Covid-19) comes, we are ready to celebrate and set Penang to the global stage.”

Rosli, who was appointed as the Penang State Heritage Commissioner on Sept 1 this year, was the general manager of Melaka World Heritage Office since 2011.

“We will restore most of Fort Cornwallis, one of the most important structures of old Penang. The restoration will bring back the old glory. It is not only an important structure for tourism but also for education because the structure will give a clue to architects, engineers and planners on how the old construction was done in Penang.

“Although it was done during colonial times, the fort was built by local people, local techniques and local materials. So, this heritage is something the people of Penang should be proud of,” Rosli said.

The physical works of the Gurney Wharf project are expected to start in the fourth quarter of this year and it would take three years to complete.

Penang Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said initially the works on the project were supposed to start in December last year, but had to be delayed due to the Covid-19 situation.

“It is the same situation with other development projects in the state. However, the reclamation works of Gurney Wharf have been completed in the middle of last year.

“We will also appoint five contractors (one main contractor, four sub-contractors) at the end of this month via the open tender process. So, there are five tenders that will be offered.

“Thus, despite the unforeseen circumstances due to the pandemic, we are still going to proceed with the project and I am very confident that this time, we should be able to complete it within the stipulated time.

“After all, our objective for the Gurney Wharf project is we want Penangites to have more green spaces, so that, they can spend their time here for recreational and leisure activities,” Jagdeep told reporters during his site visit to the project area this morning.

Also present was Penang Island City Council (MBPP) secretary Datuk Addnan Mohd Razali.

According to Jagdeep, the state government intends to make the Gurney Wharf project as an international standard recreational area, and also to benefit Penangites.

“Seven consultants have been appointed for the project. The project is expected to cost an estimated RM200 million that would be fully funded by the state government.

“The implementation of the project is divided into Phase 1 and Phase 2. Physical works for both phases will start simultaneously,” he added.

Phase 1, Jagdeep said, would include a children’s play area, skate park, viewing deck, public toilets, promenade for pedestrians, hawker stalls, retail areas and recreation park.

This phase is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2022 and would be open to the public.

Phase 2, which includes the landscaping area and recreation park, additional hawker stalls, toilets and parking areas, is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2023.

EcoWorld Malaysia surpasses full-year sales target in 10 months

Property News/ 18 September 2021 No comments

EcoWorld Development Group Bhd (EcoWorld Malaysia) reported robust sales growth in the third quarter ended July 31 (Q3’21), boosted by its success in converting digital leads into purchases during the MCO lockdown period.

EcoWorld Malaysia recorded RM2.873bil sales in Q3’21 and by Aug 31, sales had reached RM3.11bil.

Sales increased by more than RM1bil since Q2’21 enabling the group to surpass its full year target for FY’2021 of RM2.875bil.

President and CEO Datuk Chang Khim Wah attributed the sales outperformance to “agility in pursuing on-line leads aggressively.”

He cited the effectiveness of the group’s digitalisation initiatives (from frontline to backroom processes) which enabled systematic follow-through with potential customers and conversion of leads into sales online.

But despite the sales jump, the group’s results were impacted by the government imposed lockdown in June and July.

Chang expects construction work to pick up pace as the economy reopens.

“Now that 100% of our staff who are medically eligible for vaccination and more than 80% of site workers are fully vaccinated, all of EcoWorld Malaysia’s construction sites are able to operate at full capacity, which will enable us to catch up on work progress,” he said.

“We have also been permitted to reopen our sales galleries, and are therefore able to welcome customers to visit us once again to personally view our projects and properties, which is still an important step in the buying process for many,” he added.

“This will enable EcoWorld Malaysia to proceed with our plans for the launch of several new phases before the end of the year to build up a strong pipeline of sales for the upcoming year,” he said.

Adding overseas sales during the first ten-month up until Aug 31, the total group-wide sales has breached the RM4bil mark.

EcoWorld International Bhd reported RM338mil sales in Q3’21, and a further RM81mil in August 2021.
