The upgrading project of the Seberang Perai Public Swimming Pool has reached 65% completion and is expected to be finished by October this year, with the possibility of reopening as early as January next year. The entrance fee will remain unchanged.

YB Soon Lip Chee, the chairman of the Penang Youth and Sports Committee, visited the progress of the pool project on Thursday and stated that the entrance fee was the public’s primary concern. He reassured the public that the entrance fee would remain at RM3, and there is no need to worry.

He said that on March 22, 2022, the Seberang Perai City Council transferred the management of the swimming pool to the Penang Stadium Board and Open Spaces Corporation, and leased it to the private company D Swim Academy Sdn. Bhd. for a period of 18 years.

He said that the upgrading project started in July last year, and the cost was borne by the rental company. After the project started, it was discovered that there were many water leakage problems, so the project cost was increased from the original RM3 million to RM4 million ringgit.

He said the enhancement works included pool maintenance and upgrading, capping of the adult pool, upgrading of toilets, ticket counters, restaurants and prayer rooms, as well as electrical works, installation of CCTV, upgrading of the pump room and automatic acid level (pH) regulation system.

Before the closure, the pool was open from 11am to 9pm Tuesday to Friday, 9am to 9pm on Saturday and Sunday, and closed on Monday for maintenance.

The admission fee is RM3 for adults, RM1.50 for children (under 12 years old), RM10 for foreigners, RM5 for foreign children, free for the disabled and senior citizens (over 60 years old).

Soon stated that the state government fully supports the promotion program of swimming lessons for B40 families and children organized by the Youth and Sports Department. After the pool reopens, they will collaborate with D Swim Academy to provide swimming courses and enable more B40 children to learn swimming.

Penang has received a RM200mil allocation to build about 1,000 more People’s Housing Project (PPR) units, the highest ever amount ever for the purpose.

Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming said the allocation will be divided equally between two projects that would double the number of PPR units in the state.

“This is the largest PPR project allocation ever awarded to Penang.

“The state has identified five plots of land for the projects on the island and mainland.

“Once completed, they would double Penang’s existing 999 units of PPR,” he announced during a work visit to the Town Hall in Jalan Padang Kota Lama on Friday (June 23).

He said technical teams will meet to discuss details of the developments, expected in the North-East and North Seberang Prai districts.

In his speech, Nga also announced a RM9.62mil allocation for the Malaysia Home Maintenance Fund (TPPM) and Housing Maintenance Programme (PPP) in Penang this year.

“A total of RM6.76mil is approved for 22 projects under TPPM and RM2.86 mil for seven projects under PPP.

“This provision is intended to help building repair and maintenance including upgrading of roofs, water tanks and elevators that will be implemented by Penang Island City Council (MBPP), Seberang Prai City Council (MBPP) and the state Housing Board,” he said.

Also present were ministry secretary-general Datuk M Noor Azman Taib, Penang housing, local government, town and country planning committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo and MBPP mayor Datuk A Rajendran.

Penang is set to establish a new badminton academy at Karpal Singh Drive, with the goal of nurturing world-class badminton players, following in the footsteps of the legendary Datuk Lee Chong Wei. The initiative was announced by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who underscored the state government’s dedication to creating additional recreational spaces for sports activities. The academy is set to commence construction in the first quarter of 2024,

“We are fully committed to bringing this academy to life, and we anticipate its completion by 2029” stated Chief Minister Chow at a press conference in Komtar yesterday. The academy will be constructed on Chief Minister Incorporated (CMI) land, with PGBC Sdn Bhd leading the project.

Chow expressed his optimism about producing more badminton talents in the future, citing the achievements of Chan Peng Soon, Lim Khim Wah, and Ong Ewe Hock, who have brought pride to Penang with their remarkable accomplishments.

Ong, the founder and chairman of PGBC Sdn Bhd, revealed plans to rent out the badminton courts at the academy, aiming to continue Penang’s supremacy in the sport by nurturing and developing more skilled shuttlers through the academy’s programs.
