DNP Land will launch its newest architectural gem — The Sentinelle Ville @ BM Utama, a luxurious collection of 66 three-storey semi-detached homes — at the Star Property Fair 2012 in Penang.

Its general manager K.C. Tan said the latest project was being launched in response to demand from purchasers for an ultra exclusive gated community within the BM Utama township.

“Being a neighbourhood development, we want to ensure that all the homes are owner-occupied.

“So we decided to create something unique for the discerning few instead of going for a mega undertaking,” he said.

He said the emphasis of the Sentinelle Ville was its spaciousness with a built-up area of 347.8sq m as compared to 232.3sq m for a standard semi-detached house.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government will stand by its decision to acquire a 40ha plot of land for the construction of a higher education institution for women in Balik Pulau.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the Asian Women Leadership University (AWLU) had been offered alternative sites but the latter insisted on Kampung Genting.

“This university is unique and as its chief academic planning partner is the renown Smith College (USA), I believe that it will truly be an education centre of excellence, prehaps more famous than even Universiti Sains Malaysia.

“We have very high hopes for this project which will benefit the future generations,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

He said the land in question had been gazetted as an educational excellence hub but was not acquired by the state previously.

Lim also produced a copy of a letter dated June 12 from Minister in the Prime Minister’s Depart-ment Datuk Seri Idris Jala to the state government stating that the Education NKEA Steering Committee chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin approved AWLU.

“The letter states that Pemandu will facilitate the processes while licensing will be subjected to Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) guidelines.

“We were also asked to enable the transfer of land to the AWLU Malaysian Foundation,” he said.

Lim, who met with some 40 landowners on Tuesday night, said they understood the need for the acquisition but wanted “good compensation”.

“The amount will be determined by the Valuation and Property Services Department which is under the Finance Ministry,” he said.

He said AWLU was a project suggested by the Federal Government and accepted by the state government in the interest of the people.

On Wednesday, Kampung Genting Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) chairman Rosman Long led more than 50 people to protest against the state government’s land acquisition in front of Masjid Jamek Kampung Genting.

The landowners had received notices from the state secretary’s office on June 29 informing them about the land acquisition by the state for the construction of the AWLU.

PETALING JAYA: The Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) has had to approve 19 projects after 2008 because they were deemed as special projects “that could not be rejected” despite exceeding the 76m height limit.

MPPP president Patahiyah Ismail denied that she had contradicted ChiefMinister Lim Guan Eng on the controversial hillslope development issue.

“MPPP wishes to reaffirm that all projects carried out 76m above sea level were approved directly or as special projects before March 2008 by the previous state government.

“The Penang chief minister is correct in saying that the present state government has not approved any hill projects above 76m post 2008.

“For those 19 approvals after March 2008, planning approvals were based on the approval of Pelan Dasar Perancangan dan Kawalan MPPP by the State Planning Committee on Sept 13, 1996, and as special projects in accordance with State Structure Plan 2020, which could not be rejected on the basis that it exceeded the 76m height limit,” said Patahiyah in an email to The Star yesterday.

An article published in The Star yesterday pointed out that while Lim had claimed he had not approved a single project above 76m, Patahiyah had said that between April 2008 and May this year, a total of 19 such projects were approved.

She also pointed out that a claim by Penang resident Ong Eu Soon in the same article that a high-rise project in Air Itam was approved in 2009 and sitting well over 76m above sea level, was untrue.

She insisted that the Air Itam project was approved in 2005 and asserted that it was only 56m high.
