Multiple night lane closures begin today for Penang LRT works

Several long-term night lane closures and traffic diversions will begin from 16 April 2026 along key stretches of Jalan Tengah and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, as preliminary utility works for the Penang LRT Mutiara Line (CMC1 package) move into a more active phase. The closures, announced by MRT Corp, will remain in place until 30 September 2026, with works carried out nightly from 10pm to 5am.

Among the affected locations is Jalan Tengah near Giant Bayan Baru, where the leftmost lanes in both directions, the Mayang Pasir slip road, and the inner road between Nasi Kandar Makbul and Nasi Kandar Pelita will be closed in stages for utility detection and piloting works. At the same time, multiple sections of Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah will also see intermittent lane reductions, including the stretch between Pelita Nasi Kandar and the Snake Temple, the section between Jalan Tengah Apartment and Tokong Ular, as well as the industrial corridor between Clarion and Dynacraft Industries. In most cases, at least one lane in each direction will remain open to maintain traffic flow.

These works form part of the enabling phase for the Mutiara Line alignment through Bayan Baru and Bayan Lepas, one of the busiest commuting corridors on the island. Motorists using the airport route, FTZ industrial belt, and surrounding residential areas are advised to expect slower traffic conditions at night and to follow directional signage placed along the affected stretches. MRT Corp has also deployed traffic personnel, cones, and temporary barriers to manage vehicle movement safely throughout the construction period.

Juru–Sungai Dua Traffic Dispersal Project moves into Package 2 in Q3

Construction of Package 2 of the Juru-Sungai Dua Traffic Dispersal Project is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026, as Penang moves ahead with a major infrastructure initiative aimed at easing chronic congestion along the North–South Expressway corridor. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state government welcomes the federal government’s commitment to accelerate the project, which is seen as a strategic solution for one of the busiest traffic bottlenecks in the northern region.

The broader project will be implemented in phases, covering Packages 2 through 5 to complete the alignment from the Juru toll plaza to Sungai Dua. Package 1, which began physical works in October last year, is currently ahead of schedule and is expected to be operational by the end of 2027 based on its 24-month construction timeline. Once all phases are completed by the targeted end-2030 timeline, the project is expected to significantly improve travel comfort, strengthen regional connectivity, and support economic growth across Penang’s rapidly expanding industrial and residential zones.

The traffic dispersal route forms part of the larger 17.4km Juru–Sungai Dua Elevated Highway project, featuring a 9km elevated section. With the affected PLUS stretch currently carrying over 200,000 vehicles daily, the new alignment is expected to ease spillover congestion in surrounding areas such as Permatang Pauh, Bukit Mertajam, and Perai, improving daily commutes and business mobility throughout Seberang Perai.

Penang’s next big logistics hub: PILA expected to begin operations in 2029

PILA-Integrated-Logistic-Hub

The Penang International Logistics Aeropark (PILA), a strategic joint venture between the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), has officially secured approval for its Master Layout Planning Permission, marking a major milestone in strengthening Penang’s logistics and industrial ecosystem.

The project, which will introduce a new air cargo terminal at the Penang International Airport precinct, is set to play a key role in enhancing the Northern Region’s logistics capabilities while supporting the continued expansion of Penang’s industrial sector, particularly the fast-growing semiconductor and electrical & electronics (E&E) industries.

Following the approval, PDC has commenced earthworks and ground treatment works at the site. The first phase of the new air cargo warehouse, which will carry Free Commercial Zone status, is expected to be completed and begin operations by 2029.

Once fully developed, PILA is projected to handle cargo capacity of up to 500,000 tonnes annually by 2050, supported by more than 2 million sq ft of warehouse space. For its first phase alone, the new cargo warehouse is expected to provide an additional 100,000 tonnes of annual cargo handling capacity, significantly boosting Penang’s air freight capabilities.

The project is seen as a crucial infrastructure component to meet the future logistics demands of Penang’s semiconductor and E&E industries, aligning closely with the state’s broader development agenda under Penang2030 Vision, the Penang State Structure Plan 2030, and the ongoing expansion of the Penang International Airport.

Beyond its role in cargo handling, PILA is expected to enhance Penang’s position as a high-value manufacturing and supply chain hub in the region, offering seamless connectivity for global exporters and logistics operators serving the state’s industrial parks.

A launch ceremony for PILA is currently being actively planned, with the project already receiving leasing commitments from international logistics companies as well as local industry players. The official launch is expected to be officiated by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, underscoring the project’s national strategic significance.
