Folk living in the central Seberang Perai district, specifically in Permatang Pasir, will soon have the chance to apply for their desired affordable housing units courtesy of the Penang government.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the project which is to be built on a 23-acre land, will be divided into two phases.

Although planning approval has been obtained from the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP), it is learnt that other requirements must be met before proceeding further.

“Phase One (4.6 acres) is the construction of three blocks of flats, each five-storey and consisting of 350 Type A units.

Each Type A unit (650sq ft) is priced at RM42,000.

“Meanwhile, Phase Two (18.4 acres) will consist of 440 Type C3 units, which will be categorised as townhouses.

Each Type C3 unit (950sq ft) is priced at RM250,000.

“I am made to understand that various types of facilities such as a surau, a community hall, a futsal court and a non-Islamic place of worship (RIBI) will be built as well.

“The groundbreaking ceremony today marks the commitment and compassion that the state government has towards the well-being of the people, from both on the island and mainland.

“This new project, if materialised, will add more value to the community here.

“We aim at accelerating the state’s economy and giving the best and most quality-filled living for Penangites,” Chow said in his speech before taking part in the groundbreaking ceremony of the new affordable housing project in Permatang Pasir on the mainland today.

This morning’s ceremony is part of Chow’s ‘Jelajah ❤️ Penang’ programme in Permatang Pauh today.

The developer that will take on the project is Tetuan Spirit of Perai Sdn Bhd.

Architect Michael Ong Chin Keong said the expected gross development value (GDV) of the project is set at RM124,700,000.

Also present was state Housing, Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo, who in his speech said that Penang has so far provided 138,545 units of affordable homes (completed, being built and in planning to be built).

“As we know, the state has set its target to deliver 220,000 units by 2030.

“And from that amount, 10% will be allocated for the rent-to-own (RTO) housing scheme.

“If I am not mistaken, we have achieved 16% currently. We will ensure our work will benefit Penangites, especially the needy families,” Jagdeep said during his speech.

Others present were Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar and Permatang Pasir assemblyman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil.
