The newly unveiled Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery has officially opened its doors at The Light Waterfront in Gelugor, marking the arrival of a bold cultural icon along Penang’s coastline. Designed in the striking form of a turtle, the eight-storey museum stands as a symbol of resilience, longevity, and harmony — fitting for a gallery built on the mission of “Art for Peace.”

Home to a vast collection of over 1,000 artworks, the gallery showcases more than 400 pieces at any given time through rotating exhibitions. This approach ensures visitors are continually engaged with fresh perspectives, diverse storytelling, and visual expressions that bridge cultures and generations. Complementing its exhibitions are extensive facilities that include an art education centre, permanent and special exhibition halls, and an international collaboration conference room.

A key highlight is the sixth floor, envisioned as a dedicated global exhibition platform. Here, leading international artists and curated projects will find a home, positioning the gallery as a vibrant hub for cross-cultural dialogue and artistic innovation.

At the opening ceremony, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow described the gallery — realised through the vision and generosity of founder Prof Lin Xiang Xiong — as a significant milestone for the state’s cultural development. He noted that the gallery aligns closely with the Penang2030 vision, which emphasises creativity, education, and strong community bonds.

Chow also pointed to the rising prominence of cultural tourism worldwide. With major galleries increasingly shaping travel itineraries, Penang’s new landmark has the potential to elevate the state’s appeal and identity as an arts destination. He expressed hope that the gallery would become a welcoming space for all — a place where ideas flourish and future generations find inspiration.

Prof Lin echoed this sentiment, emphasising art’s essential role in promoting peace and understanding amid global challenges. While art may not stop wars, he said, it illuminates the mind and nurtures empathy — and when many such lights come together, they can dispel darkness.

To commemorate its launch, the gallery is presenting a special exhibition titled “Picasso and Lin Xiang Xiong: A Dialogue Across Time,” exploring universal themes such as anti-war, anti-poverty, and environmental awareness.

The Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery is open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday, with on-site ticketing available and online reservations to be introduced soon.
