The Penang State Government has spent RM8.789 million from the Ministry of Works (KKR) allocation to carry out repair works on 16 high-risk slopes across the island.

According to State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, the amount marks an increase of RM4.921 million compared to 2024, enabling the Penang Public Works Department (JKR) to undertake slope rehabilitation works at identified landslide-prone sites.

“The main objective of this project is to repair slopes that have collapsed or failed, ensuring the safety and comfort of road users. Key components include soil investigation, preliminary site clearing, and slope stabilization works approved by the JKR Malaysia Slope Engineering Branch,” Zairil said during a site visit to the slope repair project near Moon Light Bay along Jalan Batu Ferringhi on 7 October 2025.

He added that construction works began in August 2025, with seven projects expected to be completed by the end of the year, while the remaining nine are targeted for completion in 2026.

Zairil, who is also the State Assemblyman for Tanjung Bunga, expressed appreciation to Minister of Works Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi for approving the allocation to enhance road safety in the affected areas.

Of the 16 projects, 15 are located in the Northeast District and one in the Southwest District along the Teluk Bahang–Balik Pulau route. Twelve projects are concentrated around Bukit Bendera, identified as a critical area as it serves as the main access route for local residents.

He also advised road users to plan their journeys carefully and adhere to safety signage during the ongoing repair works.
