Pulau Jerejak development plan

pulau-jerejak-development

Two month ago, the Penang Island City Council (MPPP) announced that it has given the approval to developer Tropical Island Resort Sdn Bhd to demolish existing building structures on a 80 acres site on Pulau Jerejak to make way for redevelopment of the islet off the eastern coast of Penang Island.

Tropical Island Resort is a joint venture between Penang Development Corp (PDC) and UDA Holdings Bhd. It has in turn signed a joint-venture agreement with Q Islands Development Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Ideal Property Group to redevelop the site of the Jerejak Rainforest Resort & Spa.

However, some parties have raised concerns that the redevelopment of the area will affect the island’s forest ecosystem which is to be gazetted as a forest reserve.

Chow says Pulau Jerejak’s redevelopment became an issue because there was confusion over the facts of the redevelopment.

“When we talk about gazetting the island as a forest reserve, we are talking about Pulau Jerejak minus about 80 acres of land which has already been given to the PDC and UDA Holdings’ joint-venture company. When they proposed the plan to develop that 80 acres of land, it is often taken as developing the whole island which is not true. The 80 acres have been developed in the past although not fully,” explains Chow,

“In Penang, development is always a dirty word,” he says, adding that the state remains committed to gazetting the rest of the island as a forest reserve.

“In the proposal, there is a bridge from the island to Pulau Jerejak to allow for electronic cars as the island has no carrying capacity for [normal] vehicles,” Chow reveals. It was previously reported that the proposed redevelopment includes the bridge, 1,200 residential units, a marina, hotels and a theme park.

I truly support a world-class standard development (Residents, hotel, theme parks…) in Pulau Jerejak especially with the building of a bridge across from the Island to Pulau Jerejak for electric cars and even if the development has to extend beyond the Gazetted area for non-development.

Now Penang needs very badly a green lung and Pulau Jerejak is the only one left ! Tell the DAP go: Say absolute no to overdevelopments !

For development, going into jungle is inevitable. In Japan, every single island has a basic infrastructure of proper road. Then from there will implement eco system preservation and so on.

I strongly propose to our Government to look seriously on the open burning of rubbish as this is seriously causing hazard to the environment and surrounding. Should implement education to environment for education system since young age.

Saw some school also do open burning for the rubbish around where I stay, how to teach the next generation that we should save the environment when we can’t lead by example?

Very reasonable explanation from YAB Chow. So this is actually not “new” development, just a “re-development” of an existing developed portion of that small island. The state has been trying to make Pulau Jerejak an attraction for many years, but failed. That resort on the island has performed miserably beyond salvage, maybe due to it’s bad location near an industrial area, maybe due to inexperience operator, or just Penang has simply lost all it’s natural characters of a seaside resort destination. Anyways, this “re-development” will fail badly again, my opinion.

Yes, support you, Dong. Those who is in need of green lung please stay in Kedah or Balik Pulau, or better yet Hutan Negara. Tons of greens for you to sniff. Penang has been beautifully decorated with plants and foliage these few years. Parks and shore front have been well managed. This shows the current government really taking care of the environment whilst developing George Town into a modernize heritage city. We do welcome the development by all means. Especially like those serene Villa in Bali, we should have a better and out of the world place for Penangites and visitors to relax and proud of.

Penang still need more tourist spot to attract more tourists to visit Penang.
Please do create Amusement park, it would benefit to local residents.

    Thumb up !
