First phase of infrastructure at Penang Technology Park @ Bertam completed

Property News/ 27 February 2026 No comments /中文版

PTP Phase 1 core infrastructure work completed

Infrastructure works at the 880-acre Penang Technology Park @ Bertam have reached a key milestone, with Phase 1 completed and Phase 2 now 85% finished as at February. The entire infrastructure rollout is on track for completion by June.

Positioned as a strategic development in Seberang Perai Utara, the industrial park is emerging as a new node in Penang’s semiconductor ecosystem, supporting the state’s role in the global supply chain.

Chief operating officer of Ideal Property Group Dato’ Goh Teng Whoo said following a recent site visit that although the park is privately developed, it has received strong backing from the Penang state government.

Construction progress and land sales are advancing concurrently, he said, adding that development is proceeding according to schedule.

“Phase 1 infrastructure has been fully completed, while Phase 2 core infrastructure works have reached 85% completion,” he said.

The infrastructure package includes the upgrading of the main access road into a four-lane dual carriageway, 100ft-wide internal roads, water supply and drainage systems, power infrastructure, telecommunications services, 5G connectivity, natural gas pipelines and a 24-hour CCTV surveillance system.

Phase 2 works are expected to be completed by June, providing incoming investors with ready-to-operate industrial facilities supported by comprehensive utilities infrastructure.

To date, more than 55% of the industrial land has been taken up, including by several China-based high-technology players. Goh said the clustering of upstream and downstream players is gradually taking shape, forming an integrated industrial ecosystem within the park.

“Malaysia is building a more integrated semiconductor ecosystem, with Penang as its core hub. Penang Technology Park @ Bertam provides a platform for local companies and talent to participate more meaningfully in the global value chain,” he said.

Several manufacturing facilities are currently under construction, while additional investors are expected to commence groundworks within the year.

Among the foreign direct investment (FDI) projects secured at the park are:

  • INV New Material Technology, a global lithium battery separator manufacturer, which is developing a 66-acre facility with a total investment of RM6.4 billion. The project is expected to create 1,500 technical jobs, with its first phase having commenced operations on June 28, 2025.
  • SuperSiC Malaysia, a unit of China-based Jingsheng Mechanical & Electrical, which is establishing its first large-scale overseas production base. The first phase is expected to deliver annual capacity of 240,000 silicon carbide wafers, catering to third-generation semiconductor applications.
  • Trensor Electronics, which has committed RM100 million to set up its first overseas plant inPenang. The facility is slated to begin operations in 2026, with targeted annual sales of RM200 million.

Goh said the entry of anchor investors underscores market confidence in Penang Technology Park @ Bertam’s long-term prospects and reinforces Penang’s position as a preferred destination for high-value manufacturing and technology investments.

Mutiara LRT Line: Butterworth to George Town in 8 minutes

Imagine crossing the Penang Strait in just eight minutes, a promise highlighted as the Penang Mutiara LRT Line enters its statutory public inspection phase and invites the public to examine the revised alignment connecting Butterworth to the heart of George Town.

The Penang Mutiara LRT Line, a key component of the state’s long-term transport strategy, has opened public inspection for its updated route plans and project details. The inspection runs for three months from 24 February to 24 May 2026, giving residents and stakeholders the opportunity to review the amended alignment, station locations and supporting technical information.

The exhibition showcases revised route maps, travel time comparisons and connections between major transport hubs, outlining how the updated scheme aims to improve daily commuting across Penang Island and the mainland.

Fast and direct connections across Penang

The revised alignment highlights a direct cross-strait connection between Penang Sentral in Butterworth and KOMTAR in George Town that can be completed in about 8 minutes on the LRT, a significant reduction compared with driving or bus services during peak hours.

Penang Sentral is positioned as the main gateway for passengers arriving by bus and intercity rail, with roughly 1,000 park-and-ride bays making it convenient to switch to the LRT for quick travel into Penang Island’s centre.

“As a seamless cross-strait connection, the updated LRT alignment is designed to support everyday mobility,” the public inspection materials note.

Convenient access to key destinations

The public inspection highlights how the revised LRT will offer direct access to major destinations, including:

  • KOMTAR, George Town’s bustling commercial core
  • The Bayan Lepas industrial areas and Free Industrial Zone
  • Penang International Airport without the need to change transport modes

These connections are projected to significantly reduce travel times for commuters, students, and frequent travellers compared with current road and ferry options.

Supporting daily travel and reducing congestion

According to the inspection documents, the LRT Line’s fixed-schedule service will deliver consistent journey times regardless of peak-hour traffic or weather, offering a reliable alternative to congested road routes.

The public inspection also explains the benefits of feeder transport connections and the role of the LRT in supporting smoother travel throughout northern Peninsular Malaysia.

Public participation and next steps

The public inspection is part of the statutory review process, giving community members the chance to view detailed plans, environmental reports, and technical documents. Feedback can be submitted by visitors to the public inspection booths or via the official feedback form provided.

The revised plans can be viewed at the following venues:

  • KOMTAR, George Town
Level 2, Lebuh Tek Soon, 10100 George Town
(9.00am – 5.00pm, Monday to Friday, except public holidays)
  • Penang Sentral, Butterworth
    Level 1, 6 Jalan Pantai, 12000 Butterworth
(9.00am – 5.00pm, Monday to Sunday, except public holidays)
  • KTM Butterworth Railway Station
    12000 Butterworth, Penang
(10.00am – 6.00pm, Monday to Sunday, except public holidays)
  • APAD Office
Menara Tun Ismail Mohamed Ali, Level G, Jalan Raja Laut, Kuala Lumpur
(9.00am – 4.00pm, Monday to Friday, except public holidays)

The Penang Mutiara LRT Line — spanning approximately 29.5 km with 21 stations — remains on track for full completion by 2031, continuing to progress through planning, preparatory works and construction phases.
