The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is planning to build an underpass at the Jalan Mount Erskine and Jalan Burma intersection next year to tackle traffic woes.

MBPP secretary Datuk Addnan Mohd Razali said the traffic flow at the Jalan Burma/Jalan Gottlieb/Jalan Bagan Jermal/Jalan Mount Erskine is now “messy during peak hours” as there are approximately 50,000 vehicles using these roads daily.

“The project for the underpass and road widening is estimated to cost RM30 million while the cost of land acquisition is estimated at RM25 million,” Addnan told a press conference today.

Also present were MBPP senior engineers Cheah Chin Kooi and Zainuddin Mohamad Shariff, MBPP engineer Yong Woo Soon and HST Engineers managing director Teh Hong Sen.

The land acquisition from Jalan Mount Erskine to Jalan Burma (till Adventist Hospital) covers a distance of 700m involving 20 lots of land (4,430sq m) – two from MBPP, two from the Federal Government and 16 from private owners.

Addnan said the process of land acquisition is being carried out by the northeast district Land Office, which is also engaged in an ongoing hearing for affected residents.

“We hope to begin work on the project next year or 2021, barring any legal matters,” said Addnan, adding that the road widening process at Jalan Brown, which is part and parcel of the project, had already been completed.

    No matter which angle I look at it (from left, right,top, bottom,), it does not show much potential for traffic improvement even after spending RM50 mil for this underpass. Maybe MBPP sees something that I don’t, they should give more information to the public regarding how traffic will flow after the underpass is completed. Then only people (especially those whose homes will be affected) will be convinced that the sacrifice they make is worth it, and the project is not just to enrich certain people and contractors.

    Penang people are very hard to pleased, when during Jam, mentioned about road widening, during implementation with roads, then complain again.

    Never even once that people look into the trouble or alternatives.
    Do highway also wrong, Do underground also wrong, LRT also Wrong, Tramp also wrong… Anything doesnt goes accordingly to favor then mention about Vote them out from the Government..

    Penang people are well-pampered with everything and they expect things to go according to What they want, and sometimes just hot air talk.

    People staying @ Mt Erskine, with Penghua Girl school and the terrific Jam, nobody will ever understand that.

    No wonder Penang so ulu comparing to other places, somemore wanna compare to Singapore or etc..

    PLease change mentality first la…

    To be fair, we don’t really know those who are always against these things. They called themselves NGOs who represents no one but their political masters. Most of them that criticize are just keyboard warriors and cybertroopers anyway. I think true Penang ppl will understand that we need better infrastructure be it roads or public transport. We support any effort to ease traffic. Thats why I said no need to layan all these NGOs. We voted the current government into power. The majority has spoken. So just implement all the projects ASAP!!

    everytime whenever implementations, all the against will appear, what about the silence supporters, they all suffered from traffic issues for so many years and now there are solutions, look at FB and everywhere, these people to launch their critics, are they out of their mind?

    But the problem is, it doesn’t look like this underpass will solve any traffic issue at all. They spend RM50 mil of taxpayer money, in the process enrich “some people”, and in the end, traffic issue is still not solved. *sigh*

    That is just your ill-founded assumption. How do you know the process will enrich some people? If follow your logic, then forever Penang won’t have any new infrastructure. Whatever project definitely needs money to implement. Who wants to do it for free? Secondly I am not sure where in Penang you live in. But you obviously have not used that road often enough to realize that this project will indeed ease the traffic. The jam from PCGHS will extend all the way to Scotland Road during peak hours. My house dekat with the Race Course, and everytime we wanna travel to Tj Bungah side… jam like mad because congestion at this juction.

    @M.Radzi

    Thank you for your response. So for example, when your toilet is stuck and a plumber comes and fixes it for Rm100, and it solves your problem, then its money worth spending for the professional service.

    Now if you’re not lucky, you might get an unscrupulous plumber who tells you that the whole toilet system has to be redesigned/rebuild for RM20,000 in order to solve the problem , and worse still, the problem is actually not solved in the end after the redesign & RM20k. So therefore the difference between “enriching” and “paying for an honest service”.

    So let’s move on to this PCGHS jam. Yes, I know about the jam. If you ask me, I’d say all it takes is for MBPP to readjust the traffic flow and stop parents from double/triple park outside PCGHS in order to solve the jam problem. No need for underpass at all. Must always remember, when you get rid of one bottleneck at any point in a traffic system, the bottleneck will not disappear, but simply gets transferred to another point.

    So after having this underpass, you will definitely see massive jam at cantonment/burma road junction, after which I am sure MBPP will propose to build an underpass there too. :))) Well, good for the contractor lah!!!!

    @vivien

    Just build the underpass laaa… to get rid of doublepark / tripplepark habit at PGHS is even harder than build underpass.

    It’s the people selfish mentality to cause all the hassle, period!

    No matter how large they plan to extent Jalan Mount Erskine or Burmah. When you reach Pulau Tikus, it will still becoming single lane only (left occupied by indian store drive thru, right occupied by hawker centre/ toto user.
