    Kangkung or not, having education is better than no education. Those that immediately spew negativity rather than looking at the positive side is no different.

    I look at Bandar Cassia with hope. Hull Uni and now KDU. Both which will be providing higher education (not government syllabus) to the citizens of Penang and nearby states. Coupled with the growing industrial presence in the area will churn skilled and professional workforce which in turn will boost the economy.

    It may take years but this very well could be the next “Damansara”.

    You want kangkung education? Go to Australia. There, universities pass foreign students who don’t know much because it’s all about wang. Fail students, their parents pull them out, lose $$$. So all students pass! I would employ local U IT graduate. I wouldn’t employ local with Aussie degree. I want skill and attitude, not BS.

    Very happy to hear about KDU in BK. So sick with the thought of sending children to Klang Valley. Who wants to live in Klang? Overhyped.

    Don’t try to bullshit. Go to those recognised institutions of higher learning and not
    those with the same level as our “kangkung” universities. I think you are one of
    the local product from this kangkung institutions.

    @Clear Cut: I have worked with Australian unis. Have friends who have taught at them. Got the stories straight from them…and overhearing Chinese students talk! LOL Have degree from Australian uni myself. Worth something yrs ago. Not worth anything now. Sorry to burst yr bubble. As for BS, am putting money where my mouth is by educating children in MY, not AUS. We’ll see who’s right.You can make good ed choices in this country, but you have to do research. Think @goodday is on the right track. Have employed IT professionals for 20+ yrs. Am a “returning Malaysian”. Don’t retract anything I’ve said.

    You can buy uni degrees anywhere in the world, US, UK, Aus, no difference. But you also have good unis in US, UK and Aus. Only a small group of elite students would end up in the ivy leagues, the rest would have to content with 2nd & 3rd grade degrees. Life is never guaranteed. A degree is only a stepping stone. There’s no point arguing over whose unis are better, local or overseas. Bottom line, if you have money, invest in Gurney-Tanjung. No money, Batu Kawan. Don’t waste your time and money in anything else.

    @Kaz
    I won’t stereotype an country if I were you. I’ve got many well educated friends and relatives in Australia. All countries are there same. Nobody’s perfect. There’s the excellent universities and the useless ones that look at money purely.

    If the rich pays for their children to go to a crappy university just for the sake of getting a degree, it is a good thing. This would mean the descendants of the rich will be useless and more capable people will be able to make money through them.

    Hiring the right local graduates sometimes is the rightful decision. Being educated locally, they have adopted to the harsh environment that they are less prioritised. Hence, they work harder and demand less. A foreign graduate would almost immediately ask for a higher pay at entry level as their education would have cost a bomb. Whether they are good or bad students’ they will think that coming back from abroad gives them entitlement to ask for more. The reality unfortunately employers hires not based on where you graduated from but a combination of many factors which a local graduate could gain as well.

    So the kangkung university as Clear Cut state may churn out better graduates than that of foreign universities. :)

    Two universities are setting up at Batu Kawan. I think this is a right move to educate, equip and orientate our people to meet the demand of skill-workers in the future. Sufficient numbers of skill workers, neat infrastructures and effective authorities, this will attracts more MNC’s investments in Penang the nearly future. Ultimately, this is healthy for Penang Economy.

    In term of the KDU (or generally refer to private university) standard, its standard is excellent for me. Private universities ventured with foreign or local partner university to delivery syllabus of teaching. This allowed students to access adequate study materials and research papers. More freedoms learning environment has shaped self-reliant to students. English language in teaching helps student communicate better in the language.

    Whereas, local universities funded by government are surely as good as foreign university. In fact, according to survey, many local universities had scored into top 500, ignoring the mass of the list. In short, we are on the second place in Southeast Asia region behind Singapore, for tertiary education success. Lectures for local university are apparently more well-known and remarkable in their field of researches if compare with private university. Local University has also equipped with better research facilities and funding.

    Which alumni are the most welcome for an employer? As an employer, I personally prefer employee who can demonstrate pragmatic and hand-on approach on problems, adopt to company working culture, and bring value to the team.

    There is no reason for an employer to care about your results and your university “brand”.

    I sat both STPM and GCE A level examination myself back in early 1990’s. I think these two examinations are the same levels but only the language. I found STPM’s further mathematics and physic questions were tricky for me. Whereas, chemical in the GCE A Level was tough for me as I can recall.

    @Clear Cut

    Totally disagree with your statements.

    Seems like you get a very good education at a well known universities, but do you know that currently the graduates from universities abroad actually being offered the same salary and the same benefits with graduates from local universities. The most important thing is the graduate attitude towards their work. Local universities graduates wont loss to foreign universities graduate, many foreign country absorb graduates from our local universities. If our local U are so Kangkung like what you said then why MNC still absorb local graduates? Why Singapore will take our local graduates? Why our local graduates able to perform at international platform by winning all those international competition. Maybe you do not meet any good local graduates before but doesn’t mean that there are no good local graduates from what you called “kangkung” universities.

    @Sunny

    You can disagree in whatever way but you can’t change the realities in “kangkung”
    universities. Only quantity and not quality that matters. The current educational
    systems need to be overhauled and it will take no less than 40 yrs. to compensate
    to get back to the desired level.

    It’s not a matter of 3 to 5 years as pointed out by the education minister.A big lie
    and the “kangkung” graduates will eventually believe it.

    Anyway, the topic here is the developments and investments seen within Bandar Cassia. It is painting a promising future. May take some years but in this economic situation, it is better to invest in a “growing” development area than a “matured” development area.

    overall development in Batu Kawan is exciting… the real concern is will it materialize & sustainable and how many years to get there… some even claim that the developer will reserve a ‘green lung’ and transform it like Central Park (in New York)!

    To those who claimed kangkung, People have been queried about your education level or what you do for living. we are not here to judge KDU or what. You may address KDU as Kangkung after you are able to provide a better education than KDU for people. Maybe you had your own personal issues with kdu. who knows.
