Don’t be like Johor premium outlet outcome.. stocks so lousy and so outdated.. some items more expensive than Singapore. FYI – the premium outlet price is almost 200%-400% more than in the states. You won’t be able to buy a sale CK trouser like in the states for US$15 – US$60. No rebook sport shoe like US$29.00, no Ralp Lauren price like US$10 – US$50. Unless Penang obtained port free status..then maybe price will be different.

That place call Gilroy Premium outlet. Visit 3x per week during my 1 months training there. 5kg almost empty ‘suitcase” back with 55kg.
Counterpart there call us crazy “shop till drop”. But after I show the price tag in Malaysia to them, they shount…wow living cost in Malaysia really high.

Ya I said: Low paid high expen in Asia, especially in Malaysia.

Premium Outlet is my favourite when I visit US (california) for business trip. Cheap and good quality stuffs. BUTTTTT, I was very disappointed when I visited Johor Premium Outlet. JPO focus more on the word Premium, than the word Outlet. All the stuffs are priced similar as in shopping complex. It’s probably cheap for Singaporean, but not so for Malaysian.

Since JPO and PPO are under the same company, I doubt it will be any different.

How they want to compare it to US? All the cheap product sell in US Premium outlet is US local product, europe product is also expensive in US. If the premium outlet here want sell cheap thing, it will be selling Malaysia based product not US product and that no point cause no ppl want to buy LOL.

    Hello GG,
Not all are US made, in fact most of them are made in Asia. Rebok, Nike, Coach, Ralph Lauren shirts and all, all made in Asia. Maybe all the goods in JPO are imported directly from POs in US. It would be cheaper if JPO sources all the goods directly from the plants.

Just wanted to clarify. Cost of living has nothing to do with premium brands :). There are clothes in tesco or carrefour selling less than RM10/pcs.

    Hi KK,

I think what David meant was the quality of life here sucks. With 1% of your monthly income, you can get only low quality merchandise in Msia, whereas with 1% of of your income in the US, you can get good quality merchandise. Now if you’re talking 1% of an american working in the US, you can actually get luxury quality merchandise.

    Same equation goes for properties…:)

The only things cheaper here are healthcare, char kuey teow and car wash…:)

U already have make a good comparision. Same goes to Condomana. By the way, most of the so call “premium items” is from Sourthen America, APAC (india, vietnam, indo). PLS CHECK THE TAG attached on it.
Dollar to dollar compare, a engineer in US with 5k income = Stay in a house with swiming pool, drive BMW 5 series,..etc
Malaysia engineer earn 5k income = proton, 1000sqft condo. There is a benchmark to measure the living standard. How much need to paid for a burger in a country, this index is a good measurement.

Hello KK, if u don’t want compare brand. Let’s talk about cap palang. USD5 for 1 whole set of BB outfit (year 1-5), Where can get it from Malaysia? U see before USD1 for infrant outfit (whole set)?
My counterpart said…Hei, why u guys want Nike, LV, Coach,..etc. Is so exp. There is lot of “local brand” selling 20 to 30% of the price u paid. I can bring u to shop with full of car with only spend less than USD300.
When u have chance there, go shop around and compare. U WILL GET SHOCK EVEN WITH 3.1 foreign conversion rate.

If you go to US very often, no harm to shop for bargains from the factory outlets there. It really worth it and satisfying. For those who less travel like me, I am happy with the quality of the less branded stuff in our local malls. It really depends on personality and lifestyle. No right or wrong when comes to branded or not branded.

    Hi Bryan,

That’s a very good question! Going back to my illustration :-
    (1) with 1% of Msian monthly income –> buy low quality merchandise in Msia.
    (2) with 1% of Msian monthly income –> buy good quality merchandise in US.
    (3) with 1% of US monthly income –> buy luxury quality merchandise in US.
Now we add on another category
    (4) with ALL the wealth you have accumulated with US income when you retire –> live like a king in Msia. Why? Coz you get tax-free car, you’re not raising kids anymore, therefore buy less Nikes and Ralph Laurens, you’re not suppose to take anything too sweet therefore who cares about Häagen-Dazs. What you need is cheap maid at home, super cheap car wash and lots of Laksa!….:D

During my first visit to Gilroy, bought like crazy..maybe spent RM1-2K in one day.
Second trip to US, I started to compare the the products in Outlet are substandard compare to the retail in shopping mall unless seleted brand selling off season products.
The A&F material is thinner, Coach bag using cheaper material and rough handiwork, expired Loccitane skin care and etc…But i gave up buying outlet stuffs when my friend helped me to buy a pair of Levi’s where the length is one short and one long….When i started to shop in Levi’s shop in the mall during sale…It’s only slightly more (USD10) than price in outlet. It’s perfect and nice and cost a little bit more!! Even without sale, it’s still cheaper than Malaysia. Since then i only look out for sale in retail. A/X in US really cheap when there is Sale! Shopping in US is so much fun!

I bought RM8 super comfortable full-cotton basic tee from tesco and I blamed myself for not buying it much earlier.
Chinese people come to Malaysia to buy Vincci shoes.
It’s just that we do not have many own brands with good quality. (ice cream for one)
No argument for car, compensated with cheaper petorl may be.
I do tonnes of sports, buy RM150 new balance shoes which I think just fine, better than not-many-choice with right size in Gilroy, although at USD30.

Hello. Just to share a bit. In Premium Outlet in US, I could buy kids outfit for like USD3-USD5. These are branded outfits like Baby Gaps or Osh Kosh Big Osh, really high quality and last long. You could still get baby outfit for USD3-USD5 in Malaysia, but can you get the same quality?

Cheap at Tesco but thin low quality t shirt. I could get USD3 for a good thick cotton t shirt from fruit of the d loom. Last really long.

Sport shoes USD30 is on the high side. I got Adidas running shoes for around USD15, and last >2 years.

I thought the same too at first, but go check out again at Tesco.

Imported goods are expensive, pisang is expensive in the US too.

Anyway, I still hope that local POs can sell Adidas at USD15, I got more choices then and can have my luxury to try which brand lasts longer.

Popular Swedish home furnishing store Ikea Store will be opening its first outlet in Penang with groundwork expected to commence by end of the year or early next year.

In announcing this, Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng said the Ikano Pte Ltd, the franchisee for Ikea in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, formed a joint venture with local company, Aspen Vision Land Sdn Bhd, to develop the integrated shopping mall in Batu Kawan.

The joint venture company, Aspen-Ikano bought the land from state agency, Penang Development Corporation, for 483.95 million ringgit.

“Aspen-Ikana has bought 245 acres (100 hectares) of land in Batu Kawan at RM483 million to develop an integrated shopping mall and mixed development of offices and residences,” Lim said.

The 245 acres will include 30 acres (12 hectares) for the first Ikea Store in the northern region of Malaysia and the first phase of the shopping mall.

Another 45 acres (18 hectares) is to be set aside for phase two of the shopping mall and 170 acres (69 hectares) for mixed development purposes.

Lim added that the entire commercial and mixed developments on the 245 acres of land are expected to be completed within 10 years from the date of Agreement.

“Notwithstanding that, the IKEA Store is to be developed and completed within the time frame mutually acceptable by both parties.

“The time frame that all parties are targeting at is about 5 years or sooner, depending on various surrounding, economic and demand factors.”

Lim said the state government is confident that the entry of IKEA into Batu Kawan is a vote of confidence for Penang and a boost to making Seberang Perai as the future choice for investments, tourism and habitat for sustainable living.
