IKEA Groundbreaking 01

Cheers and Swedish meatballs liven up Batu Kawan today as IKEA marked the start of construction for its first store in Northern Malaysia.

IKEA co-workers, business friends and government officials came together for a groundbreaking ceremony at the site for IKEA Batu Kawan, Penang. The event gave visitors a taste of things to come as they were served Swedish themed food as a light lunch.

Opening in 2019, the development will put a blue-box IKEA store within a one-hour drive of more than 825,000 households in Penang.

Christian Rojkjaer, Managing Director of IKEA Southeast Asia shares that the IKEA Batu Kawan store which spans 433,000 square feet will offer more Malaysians easier access to well-designed, functional and quality home furnishing at affordable prices.

Christian Rojkjaer, Managing Director of IKEA Southeast Asia shares that the IKEA Batu Kawan store which spans 433,000 square feet will offer more Malaysians easier access to well-designed, functional and quality home furnishing at affordable prices.

“We have seen people from Penang driving more than 350 kilometres to shop at IKEA in Kuala Lumpur. This store in Batu Kawan will make it easy for them to come for a great day out”.

The Swedish home furnishing retailer is an important part of Aspen Vision City, a mixed-use development that promises to transform Batu Kawan into a vibrant community with condominiums, a financial hub, a school and parkland among others. The long-term development plan calls for IKEA to be integrated into a large shopping centre.

IKEA is like a magnet for Batu Kawan,” said Yang Amat Berhormat Lim Guan Eng, the Chief Minister of Penang and keynote speaker at the groundbreaking ceremony.

“The store will not only attract millions of shoppers – it will bring hundreds of new jobs, create spin-off business for suppliers, draw in tourists and new investors,” the Minister said. “Attracting IKEA to our state has long been a key part of our plan to make Penang an international and intelligent state that is also an attractive destination where people live, learn, work and play.”

At more than 433,000 square feet (39,979 square metres), IKEA Batu Kawan will create great day out for millions of visitors each year and help IKEA Southeast Asia realise its vision: to create a better everyday life for the many people in this region.

IKEA Batu Kawan will include all the features IKEA fans in Malaysia have come to know and love: home furnishing inspiration in more than 50 room sets, thousands of affordable products – flat-packed and ready to take home the same day, a free playground for children, loyalty programs for the whole family and the IKEA Food experience.

People in Penang can also look forward to ideas and products that help them to enjoy a more sustainable life at home while saving money along the way. The range includes products such as LED lightbulbs, efficient taps, food savers, recycling bins and home gardening solutions.

The IKEA Batu Kawan Store Manager, Pathmalingam Arumugam, is from Northern Malaysia and previously led the set-up up and operation of IKEA Cheras in Kuala Lumpur. Mr. Arumugam has already started his search for passionate retail leaders to join the pioneer team in Batu Kawan, and more than 300 local co-workers will be hired before the store opens.

IKEA Batu Kawan, Penang will become the fourth IKEA store in Malaysia, with two in Klang Valley and another in Johor Bahru, Tebrau, slated to open by end 2017. This new store promises to satisfy Penangites’ hunger for affordable home furnishings – and those famous Swedish meatballs!

The first IKEA store in the northern region will open in Penang on Jan 1, 2019, says Lim Guan Eng.

The Chief Minister said the store would help to put Penang at a high-level position.

“It is not easy to attract Ikano and we worked very hard,” Lim said in his speech before launching the press conference to announce the coming Penang Medical Expo and Malaysian Healthcare Policy Conference (PMEX 2017) at Setia SPICE Convention Centre Friday.

Ikano Pte Ltd, the owner of the IKEA franchise holder in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, has teamed up with Aspen Group in September 2014 to purchase 99ha of land from Penang Development Corp to develop the Aspen Vision City (AVC), where the IKEA store would be located.

About IKEA Penang

First announced in early 2014, IKEA Penang will be the forth IKEA store in Malaysia and the second one outside of Klang Valley after Johor Bahru. Ikano had teamed up with Aspen Group in September 2014 to purchase 245 acres of land in Batu Kawan from Penang Development Corp to develop the Aspen Vision City (AVC), where the IKEA store would be located.

The IKEA store will bring affordable range of functional home furnishings to the northern region, along with hundreds of job and economic spin-off opportunities for the local community. The construction of the new IKEA store has now started and scheduled to be completed by Q1 2019.

IKEA Penang will be the forth IKEA store in Malaysia and the second one outside of Klang Valley after Johor Bahru. Located in Batu Kawan, the construction of the new IKEA store is scheduled to start in early this year and to complete by Q3 2018.

Despite an official announcement was done by Ikano Private Limited last year, many are still in doubt of whether the plan will really kick-off. Influenced by the disappointing economic performance, some are speculating that IKEA plan has already been shelved.

To shade some light on this matter, we have found a job advertisement in LinkedIn posted by IKEA Southeast Asia 30 days ago. The company was looking for a Store Manager to support the opening of the very first IKEA store in Penang.

IKEA Penang slated to open in Q3 2018

March 14th, 2016 4 comments

ikea-batu-kawanIkano Private Limited, owner of the IKEA franchise in Malaysia, confirmed today its ambition to open a store in Penang during the third quarter of 2018.

Ikano and the Aspen Group teamed up in September 2014 to purchase 245 acres of land from Penang Development Corporation. The joint-venture company is working to transform the vast swath of land in Batu Kawan into a new metropolis where people can live, work and play. A shopping centre anchored by IKEA is a key component of the development plan for Aspen Vision City.

“The IKEA vision is to create a better everyday life for the many people,” said Ikano’s Managing Director, Christian Rojkjaer. “We expect to do that by bringing our affordable range of functional home furnishings to the people of Northern Malaysia in 2018, along with hundreds of solid jobs and spin-off opportunities for the local community.”

The planned IKEA store is to be wholly owned by Ikano. Mr. Rojkjaer said his team has applied for a building permit and earthworks are now underway to prepare a 24-acre plot for the development. The shopping centre is to be developed by the joint venture company and managed by Ikano.

The long-term development plan for Aspen Vision City includes condominiums, office towers, an international school, a Columbia Asia Hospital and a 24-acre park. Piling works are in full swing for the first phase – a gated and guarded commercial precinct called Vervéa. Plans for a high-rise condo called Vertu Resort received a warm response when it was recently introduced to the public. With a gross development value of RM8 billion, the entire Aspen Vision City development is slated for completion in 10 years’ time.
