Penang Monorail – Raja Uda / Bukit Mertajam Line

monorail-raja-uda-bukit-mertajam-line

Raja Uda and Bukit Mertajam are two higher intensity development areas in Seberang Perai. Raja Uda, an upcoming development area is located in the northwest region of Seberang Perai and lies beyond the KTM rail corridor. The proposed Raja Uda-Bukit Mertajam Monorail line will provide much-needed connectivity between Raja Uda in the northwestern region and Bukit Mertajam in the southeastern region of Seberang Perai.

For the initial stage, the monorail line is proposed to begin from Raja Uda, passing through Sg Nyiur, Seberang Jaya, Bukit Tengah, Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam and continues on to Alma and terminates at Permatang Tinggi. The line will serve the Penang state administration offices at Seberang Jaya and Bandar Baru Perda.

Potential extensions of the transit line to further areas can be in the form of a BRT system:

  • From Raja Uda towards Kepala Batas in the north
  • From Alma towards Kulim in the east.

These identified transit corridors can be reserved as part of the State’s planning process.

I’m glad to hear for this monorail/LRT project in Penang and hopefully it will come true. I just wanna give some suggestion to prolong the LRt to all over the seberang perai district, so that people in Kepala Batas like me to go to Butterworth bus terminal without any problem. For me, i’m prefer to travel with light rail than bus as it will definitely no traffic jam at LRT. Hope you may consider my suggestion. =)

I stay at Teluk Air Tawar, and I agree that a rail link to Kepala Batas would be a good idea, as there are a lot of schools along the road all the way to K.Batas, and the Rapid bus here is always full with students. I think the tunnel link with Gurney Drive should be a high speed rail link instead of a car link, as a high speed train will take possibly half the time that a car takes to go through the tunnel.

Not sure what the red line means as there is no label on the map, but I feel that LRT should be connected to the bus, train, and ferry terminal as there are a lot of passengers using these three services everyday and it would be perfect and more convenient for them to get on the LRT after getting off the ferry and train.
