Five upgrading projects to ease traffic woes

Engineering Department deputy director A. Rajendran

In a bid to alleviate traffic woes on Penang island, five road upgrading projects have been put in place by the Penang Municipal Council.

Its Engineering Department deputy director A. Rajendran said that out of the five projects, two had already been completed last year.

“The completed projects involved the upgrading of Jalan Air Itam, Jalan Gottlieb and a part of Jalan Bagan Jermal and Jalan Mount Erskine,” said Rajendran.

“Both the projects are expected to be completed by this year,” Rajendran told a press conference in Komtar yesterday.

Two other projects involve the Udini roundabout and the intersection of Jalan Masjid Negri-Jalan Air Itam-Jalan Scotland.

The remaining project, which calls for the upgrading of Lorong Batu Lanchang and Jalan Masjid Negri, is expected to commence in two months.

“The tender was closed on April 29 and works are expected to start in August,” added Rajendran.

The total cost for all five projects is RM21.1mil.

Also present at the press conference was Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng who said that the projects were part of the state’s ongoing efforts to solve traffic problems.

sorry to say that at Jalan Gottlieb.. ‘the road upgrade d like no upgrade’ the parents park their cars on the upgraded extra lane while waiting for their children off from school. the extra lane purposes seems like upgraded for all the parents to park their cars there..

    @carezone

Not very practical… many residents actually moved there to be closer to the school.

to be honest, i pass by the road every day and the traffic flow is so much better compared to before the upgrade. I would be stuck for hours, at least now the traffic is flowing with ease. It used to be a bottleneck. The upgrade certainly did help. At least now you have 2 lanes after the parents parked their cars instead of 1 lane. Cheers.

Actually, you can use other road because it’s kinda jam around after school. I’m working around there but I’m using other small road instead of this road.

Penang State Government lead by LGE is really doing a good job by upgrading roads to improve traffic flow…

Especially Gottlieb Road…if you were to compare before and after upgrading…there’s so much differences…Althought it is still conjested during school hours but still traffic is still flowing slowly…Staying at Mount Erskine for the past 15 years, I’m really glad the road has been widen…

Again, what did the previous government do to help ease traffic conjestion? Nothing…All they did was bad planning…That’s why it has cause so much conjestion in Penang…

grace :when they didnt implement you all complain, when they upgraded you all also complain!why dont you all suggest to build the underground tunnel?

I like the idea of underground tunnel but it is not easy to build on the island as currently there are many underground piping which was built with no proper planning and therefore it is hard to build as you will be looking at a tangle maze…

Agree with Grace. Traffic jam is caused by us drivers, instead of complaining, do nothing, and demand other party to fix the problem, everyone should just sacrifice a little bit and become part of the solution. Problem is, nobody wants to sacrifice themselves.

Penang is getting more crowded every year, sooner or later we can’t afford to be selfish anymore.

It’s the mentality laa…. if you are a parent of your kid studying there… will you park further away and walk to the school to pick up our kid?

    NO WAY….

coz people only like to point fingers and blame others but never look at themselves…

This is the same for every freaking school in the island and also mainland… For example, SRJK(C) Kwang Hwa in Raja Uda… every evening sure jam due to parents parking haphazardly…

what can we do? Like some said above just avoid that road or take alternative…
